Lesson Title: Thanksgiving
2015
Curriculum Area: Language
minutes

Grade Level: Pre-K

Date: November 16,
Estimated Time: 15

Standards Connection:
LL.P.1.2 Listen attentively to stories or class discussions.
LL.P.1.3 Demonstrate increased language comprehension skills by retelling or
dictating stories from books and classroom experiences.
M.P.5.1 Use math vocabulary to compare sets of objects with terms such as
more, less, equal to, greater than, fewer.
IEP Goals:
Student G will focus and listen on the teacher on 3/5 opportunities with
verbal prompting
Student K will be able to identify and use vocabulary words on 3/5
opportunities.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify one food that they eat
for thanksgiving on a teacher-made checklist with 100% accuracy.
Kid Friendly Objective: Today, we are going to be learning about different
foods that we eat for Thanksgiving!
Evaluation of Learning Objective: The teacher will make a checklist with
each students name. The teacher will ask the students to identify one food
that is eaten at Thanksgiving. Students will need to identify one food in order
to be considered proficient. If the child correctly identifies one food, the
teacher will check off next to their name. If the child is unable to correctly
identify one food, the teacher will not check off their name and they will not
be considered proficient.
Engagement: For the engagement portion of the lesson, the teacher will
read the book I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson.
Today we are going to be reading a story about an old woman who ate a pie
and lots of other delicious things on Thanksgiving day, but before we begin, I
would like for you all to sit criss-cross applesauce with your hands in your

lap. If you guys have something to say I would like for you all to raise your
hands and not speak out of turn. We need to respect our friends sharing with
the class. Lets get started. The title of this book is I Know an Old Lady Who
Swallowed a Pie and the author of this book is Alison Jackson! While I am
reading the book, I would like for you all to pay very close attention to the
types of foods that she is eating and in what order she is eating them
because we are going to talk about it when I am done reading the book! The
teacher will then begin reading the book.

Teaching: After the teacher has finished reading the book, she will
transition into the teaching portion of the lesson. Ok friends, can
anyone raise their hand and tell me what kinds of food that the old
lady ate? The teacher will give time for the students to raise their
hand and share some of the foods that she ate in the story. Very
good! I like how you all were paying very close attention to the
reading of the story! I would like for you all to think about which
food the old woman ate first. Everyone will have the opportunity to
answer one of the questions about the book but I am going to call
on someone that is sitting quietly, with their hands in their laps. The
teacher will have Velcro pieces of different foods represented in the
book laid out on the floor. The teacher will call on students to find
the piece of food she ate and stick it in the book in the correct order.
You are going to find the piece of food that the old lady ate in the
order that I ask and stick it inside of the book. The teacher will call
on a student to find the food that the old woman ate first. The
student will stick the food inside of the book. The teacher will
continue this until all of the students have had a turn and all the
pieces have been used. Awesome job! This book had lots of
examples of foods that you might eat at Thanksgiving dinner!
Different families may eat different types of foods for Thanksgiving.
I know at my house we usually eat ham, mashed potatoes, corn,
mac and cheese, and a dinner roll. I would like for you all to raise
your hands and tell me about something that you may eat for
Thanksgiving. The teacher will allow time for student response! I
enjoyed hearing all of your answers! It sounds like you all eat some
very delicious food on Thanksgiving.
Opportunity for Practice: I would like for you all to look at the Active
Inspire Flipchart on the Promethean Board. You are going to see the
question What is your favorite food to eat for Thanksgiving? We

are going to take a poll to see which of these foods is your favorite
to eat for Thanksgiving dinner. I will call on each of you to use the
pen and draw a straight line next to which food is your favorite. As
you draw your line, I would like for you all to tell the call which food
you are going to pick. After everyone has voted, we will determine
which food is the most favorite and which is the least favorite by
counting how many lines are next to each picture. The teacher will
call on each student one by one and ask him or her to tell the class
which food is their favorite. When everyone is finished, the class will
count up all of the tally marks to determine which if their most and
least favorite. I like hearing about all the different foods that you
enjoy eating for Thanksgiving. Which one had more votes or which
one is the favorite food? Lets count. The teacher and students will
determine which is the most favorite. Which one had fewer votes
compared to the others? Lets count. The teacher and students will
determine which is the least favorite. Good job, everyone!
Assessment: While the students are telling the class about their
favorite food to eat for Thanksgiving dinner, the teacher will check
off on that each child has identified a food that is eaten at
Thanksgiving dinner. If the teacher is unable to identify a food that
you eat for Thanksgiving, the teacher will not check off their name
on the checklist.
Closure: For a closure activity, the teacher will have the students
create a 1,2,3 Thanksgiving book. In this book, the students will
color the five different foods that you may find at Thanksgiving:
Turkey, pumpkin pies, potatoes, corn, and bread. The students will
begin coloring their books. After they have finished coloring their
book, they will cut out each of the pages and staple the pages
together to create their very own book! I would like for you all to
find your name at the back tables and sit down. We are going to be
coloring our very own books about foods we can eat for
Thanksgiving. The teacher will allow the students to find their name
and sit down for the activity.

Differentiation Strategies:
Accommodations:

During the teaching portion of the lesson, the teacher will give
students that need extra support two choices about which comes next
in the story instead of all of the options (Students G and K)

The teacher will also use a visual on the board for everyone to use and
see different examples of Thanksgiving foods using technology.
The teacher will also give the students multiple opportunities to
practice recognizing different types of Thanksgiving foods.
Student K and G will sit away from one another to avoid distractions for
each other and the whole group.
A classroom aide will be seated next to Student G to help keep him on
task.
During the closure activity, Student K will trace over his name instead
of writing it.
During the closure activity, Student G will have an aide to help him
write is name.

Reflection:
I believe that this lesson went very well. All of the students met the
learning objective of identifying one real life example of food served at
Thanksgiving, which was my main goal with this lesson. Using a book to
introduce the concepts of the different foods helped the students later on
in the lesson. I think that the use of technology in my lesson really helped
the students to visualize the different foods served at Thanksgiving, which
food was everyones favorite, and which food was the classs favorite and
least favorite. They responded well to the use of technology and I
believed that it greatly enhanced the lesson and learning of the students.

However, I had to change my use of technology because I could not figure

out how to work the technology tool that I made on my computer. Instead,
I created an Active Inspire board for the students, which I still believe
enhanced the students learning. I wish that I could have added the picture
that I had on the PowerPoint because I do believe that it created a great
visual for the students. If I could change one thing about this lesson I
would have had the students say a sentence about their favorite food
rather than simply saying the name of the food that was their favorite.
This would have challenged the students more and modeled what a
completed sentence is. I also think that I could have done more with this
lesson if I had more time. The possibilities for this lesson are endless but I
had to pick an idea and stay with it. Overall, I believe that this lesson
went very well. I can see myself using this lesson again in the future.
