DATE

Dear Parents/Guardians:

My name is Keondra Hill, I am your childs Kindergarten teacher at SCHOOL

NAME. I am extremely excited about being part of your childs education. I am
really glad to welcome you and your child to my classroom this year. I would like to
take this time to introduce myself to you.

I graduated from Wesleyan College with a major in Early Childhood Education. This
is my first year teaching, though I have other experience working with children. I
love reading and crafting. I have a blog which I use to express my opinions. Apart
from that, I enjoy meeting new people and learning about their language and
culture.

I am looking forward to meeting as well as knowing each student of my class and

their parents/guardians. This year will be an exciting year yet challenging, I will
try to make the class interesting, so that each student understands as well as
enjoys class. Moreover, I do not just want to stick to academics. Rather, I am
planning activities to develop the creative skills and interest of students. I hope to
make this academic year a fun-filled educational experience.

If you would like to meet with me to discuss your childs performance or any other
concerns that you may have concerning your childs performance, you can feel free
to meet me during my planning period hours, between hour to hour. It will be
appreciated if you tell me a day before so that I can prepare for the meeting.
Apart from this, you can e-mail me at SCHOOL E-MAIL to discuss any concern
you have about your child.

Yours Sincerely,

Keondra Hill

How to Turn in Homework

Each morning upon arrival students will enter the classroom quietly.

Students will turn in their daily folder into Carls belly. Carl is the
classroom friend who eats all of our homework in the morning. When
students enter the classroom in the morning their first task is to
check their folders for homework and notes and turn anything into
Carls belly, thus feeding him breakfast.

Homework
Procedures

Daily Green Folder The

green folder is sent home Monday Thursday. It will contain students
homework and, on occasion, important classroom information. It should
be sent back to school every day. Any questions or concerns by parents
should be written on the sheet provided in prong of the folder.
Blue Folder The blue folder is sent home some Fridays and contains
work that students have completed over the course of the weeks.
Parents will be able to review students work and praise them for their
efforts. It should be returned the following Monday with the date,
parents signature and any comments or concerns you may have on the
sheet provided.

Daily Reading Each student is responsible for completing 20-30

minutes of reading every night. Record all books read at home in your
Reading is Cool Monthly Reading Log.

Reading is Cool Monthly Reading Log - The reading log is sent home
at the beginning of every month and is due back the last day of that
month. Parents will help keep track of all reading their child does
during this period.

Teachers Attention Signal (how to respond when you hear it)

To get students attention I will use the give me five attention signal.
I will say in a loud voice give me five with my hand held high. Students
will respond by immediately stopping whatever they are doing with
their eyes on me and hand high in the air as well. Once I have students
full attention then I will give instructions. There will be a poster in the
class similar to the one below to help remind the students what the
give me five stands for.

*on my poster where the colored words stop, ears, eyes, mouths,
hands/feet are, I will have symbols above each word to help students
as they are learning to read.

Raise your hand or wait politely until time to talk unless giving popcorn answers. Pop
corn answers are given when teacher is asking for group answer.

Students will refer to voice meter Signal sign language letters R for restroom
break if needed.

Voice Level Chart

So students will know the appropriate voice level for a particular activity that is
taking place I will use a Voice Level chart to manage the volume in the classroom.

The voice level chart has four levels. Four being the loudest voice level and 1 being
the lowest.

Level 1 = No Talking
Level 2 = Whisper
Level 3 = Inside Voices
Level 4 = Outdoor Voices

The Voice level chart will be located on the board.

Consequences
Students who choose not to meet class room rules and expectations will
receive the following consequences.

1st consequence: Warning about behavior, redirection, and a check mark will be
given.

2nd consequence: Loss of privilege, further redirection, and a second check.

3rd consequence: Extended loss of privilege and a third check mark will be given
which will result in a discipline referral.

*Any Extremely disruptive behavior will result in immediate removal from the
classroom the first time.

The Color Chart

The color chart is used to reinforce the behavior expectations
throughout the year.

Construction:

Each student will have a total of four cards: green, yellow, blue, and
red. On the front of each card will be the students name. The cards
will be in a pocket chart. Next to the pocket chart will be a poster
explaining each consequence.

At the beginning of the year we will practice and model how we should
act when moving our color.

Anti-Bullying Policy
What is bullying?

Bulling is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or

does mean and hurtful things to another person who has a
hard time defending himself or herself.

Anti-Bullying Rules

1. We will not bully others

2. We will try to help students who are being bullied.
3. We will try to include students who are left out.
4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an
adult at school and an adult at home.
Group Motivation

To motivate students I will use the following techniques:

Compliment chain: The compliment chain will be made of colored construction

paper strips. The chain will be kept in a high place. Each time the children get a
compliment from another teacher, administrator, or adults for their behaviour, we
add a link to our compliment chain. We add links in patterned sequence, so the
children also have to guess what color we will use next on our chain. When starting
out the chain, students will be given a goal such as making the chain go to the end
of the whiteboard or as long as the window or all the way to the floor. When the
class reaches our goal we will have a surprise. Students will vote on a special party
or a special treat and work together for it. When I first try this activity I will use
a goal that can be accomplished relatively quickly and then make the goals a little
harder each time. This makes the students more interested and feels as though
the goal is attainable. They also feel as though it is a challenge to make the chain
"even longer" the next time.

Warm Fuzzy Jar: To further encourage group motivation for good behaviour,
we use a "Warm Fuzzy" jar in our classroom. I will tell the kids that when they are
all being good listeners and following directions that it gives I a warm fuzzy feeling
inside and we talk about what a "warm fuzzy" feeling feels like. Every time the
class are all trying their best, do a super job in the lunch room, walk through the
hall quietly, etc. we add a warm fuzzy (a.k.a cotton ball) to the jar. When the jar is
full, I let the kids vote on a special party. Ideas: pajama party, ice cream social,
pizza parties, etc. Once in a while, when the class is behaving in a hideously ugly
manner, I might take out a fuzzy.

Jewel Jar: This idea stems from the same concept as the fuzzy jar (above).
Instead of using cotton balls, we fill a vase with "jewels". Jewels are the flat
decorative glass beads that you can get at the craft store for flower
arrangements and fish tanks.

Group Motivation (contd)

Goal of the Day: Will be used if I need to address a large amount of

behavior problems in the classroom. There will be a poster in the room that says
"Goal of the Day". Each day, I will choose a classroom rule to be the goal for the
day. I will choose a goal that my class might have some trouble with. I will
introduce your children to the goal of the day each morning and discuss reasons
why it is important and what the rule means. I will tell the students that if the goal
is met at the end of the day that they will receive a treat (5 extra minutes of
center time, a lollipop, etc.). This gives children who have a multitude of behaviour
problems the opportunity to focus on one behaviour at a time.
Tablework:

Independent Seatwork

Students work at their seat on a variety of independent tasks, such as

Workbook pages or worksheets

Journal Writing

Reviewing sight words or spelling words alone or with a partner

Poetry Journal

Assigned Reading

Seasonal or Research projects

Early finishers can choose one of the following activities if they finish before it is time to
rotate:

Unfinished Work: I keep an expandable file on my desk. Students file unfinished

work there to complete when they have extra time. At the end of the week, I send
home any unfinished work home for homework.

Writers' Workshop Folder

Journal Writing

Poetry Journal

Read a book
Practice spelling words alone or with a partner

File folder games

Puzzle

Center Work

Students work independently or with a partner to complete centers. Centers such as reading,
writing, and math are set up in specific areas of the room. Other centers are kept in clear plastic
tubs on a shelf. The tubs are great for small or cramped classrooms because you can create a wide
variety of activities and store them in a small amount of space.

Only two students are allowed at a center at a time. Also, because there are three different
activities occurring at the same time, only one third of the class is working in centers at one time.

Students may complete more than one center if time permits. If you notice that a student has
completed a center close to rotation time, send the student on to tablework to get started. If they
finish tablework early, it's not a problem because they have options to choose from when they
finish their assigned tablework activity.

Small Group with the Teacher

Students are grouped based on reading abilities or specific teaching needs for various
reading skills. The groups are flexible so that they can be adjusted according to
individual student needs on a regular basis. Group time is focused on:

Small group reading instruction

Reviewing phonetic sounds and spellings

Reviewing sight words

Pre-teaching and re-teaching concepts to struggling students

Challenging high achievers by extending reading and writing activities

Behavior Reports

Each day my students will bring home their daily folder. Inside their
folder will be a behavior chart. Each day students overall behavior will
be marked in the folder any problems will also be addressed with an
additional note. The chart must be signed every day.

Chart will look similar to the one below but I will also add a My Work
Habits section so that parents can keep up with how their child is
about completing their work and turning it in when asked.
