Creating a Classroom Management Plan How will I create a positive, safe learning community?

Describe specific activities that will be used to develop a sense of community. Morning Meetings In my classroom, I will have morning meetings for the students. The morning meetings will take place right after the morning announcements. The students will make a circle on the carpet in the classroom. During the morning meeting I will talk about any changes that have been made in the schedule for that particular day. Then, students will each have a turn to share anything they wish with their classmates. This will give each student their own individual time to talk and share with their classmates. During this time, students will practice courtesy and patience by listening to their friends share ideas and waiting for their own turn. The morning meeting will set up a trusting, positive environment for the day. Bucket Filling My students will also have paper buckets that can be filled to encourage students. I will have paper buckets posted on both sides of the door to remind students about bucket filling each time they enter and exit the classroom. At the beginning of the school year, I will set the class up for success by reading the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? written by Carol McCloud. After reading the book, I will bring students up in front of the class and practice complimenting them. I will practice complimenting so that each student knows what the word means. I will have slips of paper at each group so that the students can write nice letters to their friends to fill their buckets. To ensure that every student will have letters in their bucket, each student will write a letter to a different group member each day. On Fridays, I will read the letters to make sure that they are appropriate before going home for students to read. At the end of each week, students can take their letters in their bucket home to read. The buckets will be taped onto the students desks and

formed like a pocket that the letters can be placed inside. I will use the bucket filling technique to keep a positive climate going in my classroom. The letters that the students receive will hopefully encourage them and help them to be more respectful of their peers. I will continue to use this activity throughout the school year. Classroom Jobs Another activity that I will use in my classroom is classroom jobs. At the beginning of the school year, I will introduce the classroom jobs to my students. The classroom jobs are the following: Clean the board Clean the desktops Reset the lunch choice names

There are only a few classroom jobs so it will be very easy to rotate them amongst the students. I will rotate by using the same chart that is used to choose the classroom helper. This will give each student an opportunity to participate in a classroom job. Classroom jobs allow students to feel like they belong in a community and they also teach the students responsibility.

What are my 3-5 rules? 1. We will be kind to others. 2. We will follow directions. 3. We will keep our hands and feet to ourselves. 4. We will share. 5. We will apologize.

My Discipline Plan Will Include . . . 1. Without disrupting the rest of the class, I will quietly address the issue with the student and that will be their first warning. 2. If the student breaks another rule, I will pull them from the rest of the class. I will have a quick talk with the student to remind them that the next time they are called down a note will go home to

1.21.14

the parent about their negative behavior. 3. If the student continues to break the rules, a note will be sent home on their behavior report to the parents. The parents will need to sign the note and return it to school the next day. 4. If the student continues to display the negative behavior then, the student will be sent to the principal for a referral. The principal may choose to have the student participate in ISS (In School Suspension) instead. What will be the consequences when a rule is broken? If a student is on number 3 of my discipline plan, they will receive a note to go home to their parent. If a student is on number 3, they will also have to sit alone at lunch. The student will not be able to sit with their friends at lunch or talk to them. If the student gets to number 4 of my discipline plan, the consequence will be the decision of the principal.

How will I communicate the consequence without stopping the lesson?

If a student is breaking a rule during carpet time, which is the instruction time in my day, I will politely ask them to go back to their seat. I will ask them to go back to their seat because they will be away from the other students and can still listen to the lesson. After the other students are making their way back to their seats, I will go over to that student and address the issue. This way other student are not hearing what I have to say and no one gets disrupted more than they already have been.

What types of rewards will I provide if the rules are followed?

Each student in the class will have a paper tens frame attached to their desk. If the student goes one week without any negative notes home to parents or referrals then, they will receive a stamp on their tens frame. When the student

has all ten spots filled up on the tens frame then, they will be allowed to choose a prize for the next day. They will choose from the following One piece of candy Eat lunch with a buddy Wear a hat to school A day without shoes in the classroom

What type of visual reminder of the discipline plan will I post in the classroom?

I will have the discipline plan on a large poster board in the front of the classroom. The poster board will be decorated with bright colors and laminated for the students to see.

How will I communicate the discipline plan to the parents?

At the beginning of the school year, I will have a night to meet the parents of the students in my classroom. For the parents who attend, I will explain my discipline plan to them that night. I will have the parents sign a form, stating that they have read what is expected of their child in my classroom. For parents who are not able to attend I will send a form home on the first day of school stating the discipline plan. I will have the parents sign and return the form. For parents who do not return the form, I will personally call them and document that I spoke with those parents.

Non-Instructional Routines and Procedures Beginning Class At the beginning of class the students will enter the room. First, they will hang up coats, book bags, and lunch boxes. Next, I will take attendance and submit the records to the office personnel. For lunch choices, I will allow the students to make their own decision. I will have a

file cabinet with each students name on a magnet. On the other side of the file cabinet I will have listed Choice 1, Choice 2, and Lunch Box. After I take the attendance the students will go over to the file cabinet and make their lunch choice with the magnets. After I see every name has been moved underneath a lunch choice I will record the choices and send them to the lunch room staff. After lunch choices have been made I will call students by groups to sharpen two pencils. Each student will sharpen two pencils in case one breaks or gets lost during the day. Students will then start on their morning work. After students are finished with their morning work we will go over the sheets and check them as a class. When we are finished checking morning work I will call students by groups to file their morning work in their folders. As they finish filing their morning work they will make their way to the carpet for instruction time. Ending Class To end the day, I will have the students go by groups to get their back packs and other belongings. As the students are getting their back packs, coats, and lunch boxes I will be filling out their behavior sheet for the day. After each student is back in their seat I will place behavior sheets in their folders and pass them out. Then, students will pack their bags, listen to the afternoon announcements, and go home. Materials and Student Work I will distribute materials in the classroom in different ways. When the students enter the classroom I will have placed morning work on their desks the night before. I will place the morning work on their desks the night before to save time the following day. Instead of walking around and collecting each students morning work, I will call students by groups to file their morning work into a folder. The students will keep leveled books, text books, workbooks,

scissors, glue, pencils, and coloring materials in their desks. I will allow the students to keep these items in their desks so that we do not have to stop and pass them out during class time. Student Helpers At the beginning of the school year, I will write each students name on a poster board. I will have the names placed in alphabetical order on the board and laminated. The poster board will hang on the wall near my desk. Each morning the student will know who the classroom helper is by looking at the name under the previous helpers. Routine Tasks To manage pencil sharpening, I will allow students to come up by groups and sharpen two pencils each morning after making their lunch choice. I will manage bathroom breaks according to whether or not I have a classroom bathroom. If I do have a bathroom inside of my classroom then, students will be allowed to use the restroom at any time, other than carpet time. Carpet time is where most of the instruction will be done so, I do not want them to miss out on any important information. The only restroom break that we will take as a whole group will be after lunch. This will give every student an equal opportunity to use the restroom. I will be teaching lower grades so there will not be any classroom switching. When we need to go out into the hallway for special areas, the students will walk in a single filed, quiet line. This will ensure that I have each student going to the right place at the right time. To ensure that my students are appropriately supervised and safe during emergency situations, I will practice every drill as if it were real life. The school will have emergency drills to practice the students safety. These practices would be exercises like fire drills and tornado drills. These drills will help the students understand how to be safe in a real-life crisis situation.
