TWS 9 Learning Environment

A. Classroom Management:

Morning Meeting I will construct a morning meeting every day

so that students can tell a story or simply tell or receive a good
morning to their neighbor. Students will come in, do their normal
morning routine, and then come to the carpet, when everyone is
here for the day I will begin the morning meeting. The students
will find two people to say good morning to and then turn their
attention back on me. I will ask if anyone wants to share an
interesting story or something they did last night, and if there are
numerous hands that go up, I will choose two to tell their story
and then instruct the rest to tell their neighbor. This lets the
students know that what they have to say is important and that
someone wants to hear about it. Choice - Throughout the day, I
will also give students choices that they can choose from so that
they feel responsible for their accomplishments. For example, I
will give them a choice of which activity to do first or what kind
of paper they want to write on.

1. We always encourage and lift up our fellow classmates

because I would want others to do that for me. Students would
be expected to talk nicely to others and say nice things in
response to their stories that they tell or the answers they give
for a problem. This will help the environment to stay emotionally
safe because if students are saying nice things in their response
then students will be open to sharing more ideas, feedback, or
stories.
2. I need to raise my hand to walk or talk during table time.
This rule is implemented to keep the students safe and focused
on their work. If I am working with one student while the rest are
at his or her table, I need to know where each student is in case
of an emergency. Students are also expected to stay quiet during
table time so that I am able to work with students individually
and students are able to stay focused on their work. They may
raise their hand if the have a question or is in need of something.
3. We keep our hands and feet to ourselves. This is another
rule that is implemented for students safety. Students will be
expected to not use violence of any form forward another
student or adult. This rule also applies to students touching each
other to aggravate them. If students follow this rule than we
should have no student inflicted injuries and it will keep the
students safety physically and emotionally.
4. We use ours manners at all times. This rule is a teaching tool
for all students because it will enhance their thinking and

ECED 429

behavior as they learn to follow this rule. Students will be

expected to say, maam, sir, excuse me, and thank you, and
they will also be expected to use their utensils and napkins
during lunch. This will keep the environment pleasant and clean.
This will also help students gain respect for adults and one
another in the future.
At the beginning of the year, or the beginning of the implementation
of the rules, students will have one warning. This means that I will talk
to the student that disobeyed one of the rules one-on-one, and I will
explain why they are getting a warning and discuss what they should
have done. After I feel that all students fully understand the rules and
what is expected of them I will explain that I will not be giving
warnings anymore because everyone knows what to do. I will also
explain that since I am not giving warnings the first time any student
makes a bad choice they are responsible for the consequences that
come with that choice.
First Offense They will be directed to the refocus chair to think
about what they did to get there, what they should have done instead,
and how they can make it better. Students will also be encouraged to
go to the refocus chair if he or she thinks they are about make a bad
choice or if they are mad and need to cool down. This is not supposed
to be a bad place; it is simply where they think about what they
could have done to avoid disturbing the learning.
Second Offense The students will receive a sad note home or I
will directly call the parent/guardian right then. The note will contain
the action of the child and why that is not tolerated in the classroom.
The parent will have to sign and return the note with any comments or
concerns. I will also talk with the student to make sure why they are
having a note sent home and what it says.
Third Offense The students parents/guardians will be called in
for a conference. During this conference, I will explain what the
student is doing during the class period and why it is not allowed in
the class and whom it affects. We will also discuss the plan of action
that needs to take place in order for the behavior to be resolved.
Any misbehavior that endangers other students will be dealt with
immediately. That student will be escorted to the principals office to
explain what he or she did that caused them to be where they are.
That will also result in the parent or guardian of the student being
called in for a conference.
Positive and Negative Reinforcements:
I would use the students that were showing good behavior as an
example for the class. I would ask the student if I could show
them off to the class first and then I would ask the class to look

or admire how that student was demonstrating the correct

behavior.
I will use positive and negative reinforcement by allowing the
students that are doing what they are supposed to be doing to
line up first or do an activity before the students that are not
doing what they are supposed to be doing. This will reward the
students for doing the correct thing and then punish the
students by waiting for doing the wrong thing.
If time allows during some days, I will allow the students that
have been completing their work and following the rules to have
extra time at recess.

B. Non-Instructional Routines and Procedures:

Students will meet at the doorway in the mornings to sing the lunch
choices. Students are expected to unpack their book bags at their
cubbies, make their lunch choice, and sit and watch the morning
movie quietly on the carpet. Once most students are present, I will
take attendance by calling roll and also checking off the breakfast
sheet. We start our day by listening to the morning announcements,
eating breakfast, and having our morning meeting. At the end of the
day, students will be expected to pack up their book bags when I call
their name and only when I call their name so that does not cause
heavy traffic and arguments. I will have the students sit on the carpet
with their book bags on while they listen to a goodbye song or
relaxing music. We will talk about all the positives that we had in our
day so that students will leave happy and ready to come back the
next day.
I will always try to pass out materials before the lesson begins while
the students are occupied with something else or with the related arts
teacher. I will call the students to the carpet to explain the directions
so that the materials on their tables do not distract the students. If I
need to collect student work than I will instruct the students to leave
their work on their table in their space with their names on it and
move to the carpet for our next activity. While the students are
involved with their next activity, I will walk around or ask a student to
walk around and collect all the work. Both of these strategies will
hopefully allow for more instructional time.
I will assign weekly jobs to each student because I believe that helps
them build responsibility. The jobs will include, but not limited to,
sweeper, line leader, bookkeeper, distributor, collector, and more.
These jobs are designed to keep the students prideful while doing

their responsibilities. Each student will get a chance to be assigned to

every job. I will have an object that looks like a clock with all the jobs
on the outside and the students names on the inside. It will rotate
each week so that students will move to the next job.
I will have a bucket of sharpened pencils on each table and they will
be allowed to substitute pencils two times. At the end of the day, a
student with the assigned job pencil sharpener will sharpen all the
pencils that need it. If I have a bathroom inside my classroom, I will
allow the students to get up and use the bath whenever they need to
without raising their hand besides when they are at their tables
working. When I have my students line up, I will be looking for the
best looking behavior demonstrated by each row, table, or student to
line up first. I may call boys or girls to line up first to see how quietly
they can do it.
In the case of an emergency or a drill, I will firmly, but calmly, tell the
students to stand up and walk over to the door without talking. I will
stress that they are not to make any sounds because that may
endanger all of us if we cannot hear what is being told to us. Students
will be expected to walk in a single file line and to our designated
area. When everyone is settled I will count twice to make sure I have
everyone in my class. If someone is missing, I will report it to the
person in charge. Before any drills take place, I will have already had a
discussion about what to do in these cases and what behavior is
expected of them.
