The Toro Tool Joint Idener is a simple yet eecve way to determine most oil eld rotary shouldered connecon
types. This can be an invaluable tool when the connecon idencaon marking is worn or in queson. The Toro
Tool Joint Idener also includes a bit nozzle idener for checking the bit nozzle orice. Both measuring
instruments are combined into a compact and portable ruler format that can be made readily available should a
queson arise in the eld.

The following rotary shoulder connecons can be determined by using the Toro Tool Joint Idener:
API Numbered Connecons (NC) API Regular Connecons (REG)
PAC Extra Hole (XH)
Full Hole (FH) Hughes (H-90)
Internal Flush (IF)

HOW TO USE THE TORO TOOL JOINT IDENTIFIER
Pin Threads:
First, you will need to determine the thread count by inch using the thread cut outs at the end of the idener
(Figure 1)

Connue to use the thread cut outs unl you have a match.
In Figure 1 the thread cutout idenes the pin as 4 threads
per inch.

When idenfying a pin connecon, rst determine whether it has a cylinder radius or a stress relief groove. (Figure 2)

If your pin connecon does not
have a relief groove, use outside
diameter calipers to measure the
cylinder radius next to the pin
shoulder. (Figure 2)

Using the Tool Joint Idener, place one side of
the outside diameter calipers in the pin notch and
the other side on the idener to measure the
size. (Figure 3, Figure 4)

In this example, because we determined that the connecon is 4
threads per inch, the Toro Tool Joint Idener has designated the pin
threads as NC 46. (Figure 5)

Figure 3
NOTE: Because we determined that the pin is 4 threads per inch,
the nearest measurement is NC 46 (this is why we must know how
many threads per inch the connecon has before measuring it) In
this example we know that the threaded connecon is NC 46.

To measure a pin with a relief groove, you will need a couple of rubber bands or another set of hands. You will also
need another Tool Joint Idener or a straight edge.

Place two straight edges on opposite sides of
the pin and hold in place with rubber bands
or have someone else hold them in place.
(Figure 6)

Using outside diameter calipers, take a width
measurement from both sides of the straight
edges next to the shoulder and around the
relief groove. Be sure to subtract the thick-
ness of the straight edges before checking
the thread size on the tool joint idener.

connecon with a relief groove, then be sure to

First determine the thread count per inch using the 3 cut outs at each end of the idener.

Connue to use the thread cut outs unl you have a match.
In Figure 11 the thread cutout idenes the pin as 4 threads
per inch.

Using the Tool Joint Idener, locate the BOX designate. (Figure 12)

Place the other side of the idener on the face of the box and measure the width to determine the connecon size.

Using the Tool Joint Idener, the end
marked BOX inside box threaded
connecon counter-bore at the widest
secon of the box.
Move the idener up and down slightly to
see which threaded connecon matches up
closest.

In this example, because we determined that the connecon is 4 threads per inch, the Toro Tool Joint Idener has
designated the pin threads as NC 50. (Figure 13)

HOW TO USE THE TORO TOOL NOZZLE IDENTIFIER
The Toro Tool Joint Idener is a simple yet eecve way to determine nozzle size in drill bits nozzles. To determine
nozzle size, insert the small end of the Nozzle Idener into nozzle orice. Check the measurement at the locaon
where the Nozzle Idener stops inside the orice. This measurement will be the diameter of the orice.

The front side of the Nozzle Idener shows increments in 1/32 of an
inch. The number on this side is typically used to idenfy the nozzle
type (i.e. #12 nozzle, #16 nozzle, etc.).

The back side of the Nozzle Idener shows the same measurement
markings as the front side but in 1/8 of an inch increments.
