ANTIBIOTICS

PENICILIN
INTRODUCTION
Penicillin is a group of antibiotics derived
from Penicillium fungi
Penicillin antibiotics are historically significant
because they are the first drugs that were
effective against many previously serious
diseases
The term "penicillin" can also refer to the
mixture of substances that are naturally, and
organically, produced
Common adverse drug reactions (1% of
patients) associated with use of the penicillins
include diarrhea, hypersensitivity, nausea,
rash, neurotoxicity, urticaria, and
superinfection (including candidiasis).
Infrequent adverse effects (0.11% of
patients) include fever, vomiting, dermatitis,
seizures .
Room temperature and airtight container
DOSAGE
The dosage of penicillin V potassium should
be determined according to the susceptibility
of the causative microorganism and the
severity of infection and should be adjusted to
the clinical response of the patient.
The usual dosage recommendations for adults
and children 12 years and over
OVERDOSE
Signs and Symptoms: Symptoms of large oral
overdose of penicillin may cause nausea,
vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, and, in rare
cases, major motor seizures. If other
symptoms are present, consideration must
also be given to the possibility of an allergic
reaction or symptoms secondary to a
concurrent medication or other underlying
disease state, especially in adults.

CAUTION
Penicillin should be used with caution in
individuals with histories of significant allergies
and/or asthma.
The oral route of administration should not be
relied upon in patients with severe illness or with
nausea, vomiting, gastric dilatation, cardiospasm,
or intestinal hypermotility
Prolonged use of antibiotics may promote the
overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms,
including fungi. If superinfection occurs,
appropriate measures should be taken
