CONCEPTS
1. FORCE : It is that which moves an object from a state of rest or brings a moving
object to a state of rest.
2. INERTIA : An object cannot by itself change its state of rest or its uniform motion in
a straight line.
3. INERTIA OF REST : An object in a state of rest has the tendency to continue in that
state.
4. INERTIA OF MOTION : An object in a state of motion has the tendency to continue
in that state.

LAW
NEWTONS FIRST LAW OF MOTION: Any body continues to be in a state of rest or of
uniform motion in a straight line until an unbalanced external force is applied on it.

SUMMARY
Newtons first law of motion mainly consist of two concepts such as force and inertia.
Force is required to stop a rolling ball. In this case a force has to be applied on the rolling ball
in the opposite direction of its motion in order to bring it to the state of rest. A ball at rest can
be made move, only by applying a force on it. Thus force is defined as something that which
changes or tends to change the state of rest or of uniform motion of a body along a straight
line. A moving ball has the tendency to keep on moving until an external unbalanced force is
applied on it. This tendency is called inertia of motion. On the other hand, a book placed on a
table has the tendency to stay still and this tendency is called as inertia of rest. Thus an object
cannot by itself change its state of rest or its uniform motion in a straight line. This is known
as inertia. By combining the concept of inertia and force, Sir Issac Newton stated a law
known as Newtons first law of motion. It states that Any body continues to be in a state of
rest or of uniform motion in a straight line until an unbalanced external force is applied on it.
Thus the e-content can be conveyed very easily and clearly to the students. It will definitely
motivate them to learn. By using the wide scope of e-content, we can make the teaching-
learning process more effective.
