Learning Experience 9

Lesson Duration: 60 minutes


Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to confidently research given topics
View and read written, visual and multimodal learning area texts that: use contents, home pages
and subpages, glossaries, full indexes, and supporting details to enhance readability; & contain new
information that requires reading and research to build background knowledge (VR6 ii)
Classroom Organisation:
This lesson is happening during the Students will be paired with a buddy with an iPad between the
two. Webb & Palincsar (1996), found that when use computers for learning in groups, then groups of
sizes two to four are most effective.
Learning Experiences
1. Recap on the two styles of presentations the students have been learning about.
2. Inform the students of the approaching summative task
3. Go into depth about what the task requires them to do
4. Talk to students about the research that must go into presentations
5. Teach students that published books are one of the most reliable sources and the library will
have the information they need.
6. Teach them about their schools databases online
7. Model good research strategies, key words to type in, websites to look for etc.
8. Now get the students to try researching their own resources. Aim for at least 1 book, 2
websites and a database article per group.
9. Float around the room visiting each pair. Discuss the strategies that were used and the
results found etc.
Adjustments:
Pair the ADHD student with a very well behaved student and enforce positive behaviour.
As there is an odd number of students in the class, there will be one group of three. The Gifted
student will be paired with a delayed student and an average student as well.
The two ESL students can not partner together as they are encouraged to work in groups with
English First Language students to further develop their English through receptive and productive
modes.
