Strategy Name Strategy Worksheet #3

Real-world observing/participating

Brief Description (in your own words):

This strategy engages students in content by presenting the material in a way that represents its
application and practice in real life. This can be done visually or physically through the use of
realia, models, multi-media, active participation, or even guest speakers. The beginning of a unit
should engage students to want to know more, and contextualizing content is essential to this.
Instructional units should be framed in a way that is relevant and meaningful to students in order
to maximize learning.

How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student
Teaching, or in Your own classroom

Contextualizing science is very important to making the content meaningful and relevant to
students. This can be easily achieved in a science classroom since science is all around us in
the world. Specifically, there is a wide variety of visual material to use in a science classroom,
anywhere from photos, videos, and physical models or realia. Inviting guest speakers would
also be useful in framing a unit in a real-world perspective. One way I would present science
content is through a hands-on activity that addresses a real-world problem. I would present an
idea that would allow students to generate their own central questions. Having student-led
instruction allows students to be actively engaged in solving a real-world problem that is
meaningful to them. Real-world participation will get students more involved, not only in the
classroom, but also gives them skills to be active participants in society now that they have a
practical application of the knowledge.
