Brief Description (in your own words):

This is a writing assignment that students do to practice vocabulary, comprehension of content,
and writing. This is a method of goal-based writing with a defined purpose, in which it has a role,
an audience, a format, and a specific topic. This strategy also encourages students to think
critically and creative and provides an opportunity for students to synthesize their learning.
How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student
Teaching, or in Your own classroom
In my internship, students were assigned a RAFT writing assignment in which they had to write
a short, informative essay about the risks or benefits of GMOs. I would like to use this strategy
in my classroom as it requires students to actually elaborate their understanding of the content.
This is a great method to use in a science classroom, as there are plenty of concepts in science
that are scrutinized from all sides and by having students take a role and write about it, they can
develop their opinions and understanding, therefore assigning value to the content. Its
important that content is made meaningful and relevant to students and by using an assignment
like this, they can build it on their own.
