Working together

Afifah and Athifah

We have been working for Healthy Heart awards for a while. We have improved our
eating habits a lot, even our children. They like to eat fruit and crackers for morning
tea everyday, one of the reasons are that the children involved in morning tea
preparation themselves. This morning we decided to do something different, instead
of eating crackers everyday we could eat toast and jam today. So when I have got
everything ready e.g. a toaster, a loaf of multigrain bread, jam and margarine ready
on the table, Afifah and Athifah came to help. They washed their hands before I ask
them because they know that we have to wash our hands before handling food. All
the other children sat around the table. Showing the toaster I asked them if they
knew what it is! Isa said, Ohh we have one of that at home, the bread pops up!, and
he demonstrated with his hands how the slices of bread pop up. When two pieces of
toast was ready I showed how to spread jam over it. Then it was Afifahs turn. Afifah
said she doesnt like jam. I asked her to use just margarine, so she spread a few
pieces of toast with jam and a few pieces of toast with margarine. Athifah was waiting
for her turn, we were using only one butter knife and one bread board, so that they
can take turns and learn to be patient. Its so nice to see them co-operate and take
turns and help each others.

Throughout this activity Afifah and Athifah were
learning to spread topping over slices of toast
bread, learning to control their hand and finger
movements, developing confidence and
independence and social skills, building up self-
esteem and good relationships, learning to help
each other, and also developing positive attitude
towards eating healthy food.
