Yeast Characteristics Yeasts Function is >>>>>>> <<<Describe the type of organism Yeast is>>>> <<In a complete sentence tell me: What process gives yeast its energy? Describe the process.>> <<In a complete sentence tell me: How do you know that yeast did this process?>>
Group Roles: Team Leader and Data Collector: <<name>> Making sure your group is on task In charge of choosing the variable to test Making sure your experiment is approved by Ms. Boyea Collecting Data Experiment Leader: <<name>> Creating the experimental set-up Getting supplies and setting it up Running the timer and tell the leader when to collect a data point
Yeast Lab Information The Independent Variable I am changing is <<<enter IV>> The Dependent Variable is <<<enter DV>>. It is the variable that is changed and I will measure for the results. Hypothesis is a prediction based on your knowledge. <<enter your Hypothesis>> My control experiment is going to have <<enter whats in your control bottle>> and I will compare my experiment to it. I will keep the following conditions constant: Materials <<enter a list of all the materials you need!>> Procedure Label 1 tube Control and 1 tube Experiment To control tube: add 5 mL of 5% Sucrose solution (table sugar and water) and 5 mL of yeast To Experiment tube: <<enter what you are going to change for this tube>> Swirl Use tongs to set tube in hot water bath thats at 38-40 C for 5 minutes. Make sure the temperature stays constant <<if you are changing temperature tell me how here>> While you wait, turn on your Lab quest and plug in the probe. Let the probe acclimate and 3 minutes record the amount of CO 2 in the air Take your tongs and pick up the tube. Pour each warm yeast solution into a respiration chamber. Quickly place the probe in the chamber. Wait 2 minutes for it to equalize. Take your first measurement for time 0 Collect Data every 5 minutes
Data Analysis Experimental Test Control Test Time (min)
CO 2 (parts per million: ppm) Respiration Rate (ppm/min) CO 2 (parts per million: ppm) Respiration Rate (ppm/min) 0 5 10 15 20 Data Analysis <<Explain what you can say about your data.>> Error Analysis <<Insert sources of Error. What things could have effected your results? Did you mess anything up>> Questions for Analysis: 1. Why do you need to incubate the yeast before you start collecting data?
2. Yeast live in many different environments. Make a list of some locations where yeast might naturally grow. Estimate the possible food sources at each of these locations.
Questions for Analysis: 1. What type of cell respiration is yeast doing and what could you measure to confirm that?
1. When bread is baked, the dough is placed in a warm place to rise. However, if you want to bake the bread the next day the dough can be kept overnight in a refrigerator and it wont rise. Explain why a baker can do this.
Conclusion: In a paragraph summarize the results right into your formal lab report. Include the following: The purpose of the lab What is used to indicate respiration rate Was your hypothesis correct? Conclusions supported by experimental data Explain why you see the patterns you reported:
