Ahmed and LaForest

UWRT 1103

Notes:
-50% of nations growth
between the years 2000-
2010 was Hispanic
- 59% were undocumented
from Mexico
-White conservative
complain about Hispanics
in school and over hearing
Spanish being spoken in
places such as Walmart
-Language is power
------------------------------------
-unveiled was simply
modern and advanced
-return of the veil in the
80s
-veil was brought back by
spread of Islamism
-also brought raise in
violence/crime
-people thought Muslim
militia had a hand in
American because of the
Hijab

My Response:
-I think it is ridiculous that
some people look down
upon someone just
because they hear them
speak another language.
Although people are
coming into our country
undocumented I dont
believe they should be
looked down upon after all
they are just trying to
better their lives and loved
ones lives. Its wrong what
theyre doing but its not
like they murdered
someone. They are not
ruining our language they
are just adding to our
language.

Their Response:
-Madeline, I agree with
you. I was really struck by
the story about the father
who introduced himself in
Spanish and got a negative
(the writer thinks)
response. English has
always grown and changed
based on interactions with
other languages I think this
cultural moment is similar
of course, people in this
country have also generally
responded negatively to
new elements, so I guess
that part isnt new either.

Inquiry Questions?
-Is wearing the Hijab to do
with the rise of the
brotherhood or just
relating to culture?
-Is language dramatized by
the media?
-How do we decide what is
correct and inoffensive?
-Do immigrants realize
what America is now or do
they still see it as the land
of opportunity?
-What is political
correctness?
-Why are we so against
immigration now?
