Interview with Interior Design
Interior design is a career that requires creativity as well as the foresight to predict
exactly what a client is looking for in their new space. It surprised me to learn that this job has
more than just a creative component. This job requires you to always be in close contact with
people, not only to take notes on their style preferences; you need to also be able to read people
and interpret their true feelings into something visible. This is a component to interior design that
fascinates me because it is something that cannot explicitly be taught. There are classes that
teach the basics of interior design, but a formal education in this field is no substitute to an
individuals eye for detail.
The recipient of my interview did not immediately enter the field of interior design. They
had to put their time into other jobs before they were able to enter the field of their choice. This
information was valuable to me because it gave me a sense of reassurance. It is often difficult to
enter your career field of choice, and it is comforting to think of a career as an ongoing process
that doesnt necessarily have to begin on the same track as your destination.
This type of work was slightly different from what I imagined. I expected the creative
component of interior design; however, the personal aspect of this job surprised me. My MBTI
(Myers Briggs Type Indicator) test suggested careers that would require me to work in close
contact with other people as well as display creative vision. As an INFP (Introversion, Intuition,
Feeling, and Perceiving) the missionary, corporate team trainer, and interior designer career
fields were all suggested to me by the MBTI. This works well because I do feel I need to work in
a field that requires me to work in conjunction with other people; I also like the idea of creating
new things. At one point during the interview my interviewee stated that the most satisfying part
of her job is the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment she receives when she walks into a
finished room that she created through her own vision. This really resonated with me, because I
feel my most accomplished looking at something I created.
Although Im still unsure as to whether this would be a possible future career for me to
consider, interior design was something that peaked my interest. Interior design may not be the
best for me, but it does make me consider selecting a career with more of a creative aspect. Now
I feel the need to research careers that combine creativity with complexity. I want a job that
allows me demonstrate skills I have obtained while still being able to express my vision.
