For much of Trudy Mitchuals adult
life, she has been committed to ser-
vice as a nurses assistant, then later
as a nurse, still later as a nursing man-
ager and director, and now, as Hos-
pice of the Panhandles new inpatient
facility director.
Most recently, Mitchual worked as
the director of nursing at Elmcrof in
Martinsburg for the past year. Over
the past 20 years, she has also worked
at the VA Center, Western Maryland
Medical Center and in home health
care. While at Elmcrof, she said she
learned great lessons about end-of-life
care provided by the Hospice team.
Hospices IPF opened at the end of
March, and is currently stafed to take
care of seven patients. Generally, pa-
tients stay for short periods of time
a matter of days - to receive general
inpatient care, respite care and a lim-
ited amount of residential care. Since
the facility opened, more than 175 pa-
tients have received care.
Serving just comes naturally
for new inpatient director
During the past month, shes sat
in nursing orientation, management
training, has gone on ride-alongs with
nurses, and has spent a good deal of
time getting to know staf, as well as
patients and families, especially at
the inpatient facility. One of her main
goals over the next six months will be
learning the how-tos of running a
14-bed unit, as well as increasing the
number of patients served there.
Im looking for ways to promote the
facility it is such a beautiful place,
and we want to be sure that many
have the opportunity to use it, she
said. I will go the extra mile.
Mitchual resides in Hagerstown
with her husband, Norbert and three
children, who are 16, 15 and 12.
For more information about Hos-
pices inpatient facility, contact (304)

you wanted, fghting the wind if you felt like it,
seeking out new sights just on the strength of
your feet and the courage of your lungs. Jesse

pon their arrival on the automotive marketplace, global positioning systems, or GPS,
quickly became a phenomenon. Even today, years after that introduction, GPS
devices are still relied on by millions of people to help them navigate the countrys
roadways. Many others rely on the GPS of their mobile phones, employing such capabilities
in concert with digital maps while driving.
Although they can help a person with directions or make it easier to nd the nearest fuel
station or rest stop, GPS systems are not foolproof. Plus, when used improperly, they may
increase the risk for accidents by drawing drivers attention away from the road.
According to Corvallis Micromorphologic, Inc., GPS work with a group of satellites that
communicate with GPS devices to pinpoint a cars location. They can do so up to 164 to
328 feet of your location. Afterwards, your position on the planet is overlaid with a digital
map and navigation information stored within the GPS receiver. The GPS can then provide
directions and suggest routes based on certain parameters.
GPS has virtually eliminated the need for paper maps to get from point A to point B. Many
people argue that GPS has made it safer to drive because drivers and passengers no longer
need to ddle with maps should they get lost. Whats more, GPS devices decrease the
chances of getting lost and becoming distracted by surroundings when looking to get back
on course. For those unfamiliar with the roadways or surroundings, navigation systems can
alert drivers to which lane to be in and upcoming turns or obstacles.
However, GPS devices are fallible. Trusting in them too completely can lead to adverse
consequences. The following are safe ways to use navigating devices.
Pre-program the device. Dont program the GPS while moving. Enter the destination prior
to departing. For those drivers who need to make changes or more
fully examine the directions, pull over to a safe area to do so.
Select a hands-free device. When buying a device, select a GPS
navigation system that is hands-free. This can be a unit that mounts on
the windshield or is built into a cars dashboard. Avoid holding a mobile
phone to look down at a map. Drivers who do so can take their eyes off
the road long enough to cause an accident.
Learn the terminology. Each GPS unit is different and may have different lingo for
particular instructions. Very often a device may instruct drivers to keep left when it simply
means to stay straight on course. This can confuse motorists who may think they need to
get into a left lane. Take the GPS for a trial run in a familiar area to learn its particular quirks.
Avoid distractions. The Network of Employers for Trafc Safety found GPS use can, in
certain instances, increase distractions while driving. NETS found when GPS users muted
their devices instead of listening to voice commands, they spent more time looking at the
screen than at the road. The National Highway Trafc Safety Administration estimates
driver distraction plays a role in up to 30 percent of car crashes in the United States each
year. GPS systems can be yet another distraction. Avoid staring at the screen by looking
ahead at the directions mapped out by the device to have an idea of whats coming next.
This should be done before embarking. Drivers should limit looking at the GPS screen to
passing glances, just as they would any component of the car. Have a passenger assist as
the navigator.
Use common sense. Not all directions are accurate and they may change based on road
conditions or new trafc patterns. Drivers should not follow GPS directions at the cost of
ignoring common sense and road signage. Also, the rules of the road should always take
precedence over what the GPS is telling the driver to do.
GPS devices have made getting around easier. Using them in a safe manner can reduce
distractions and help drivers reach their destinations.

he arrival of cooler temperatures means motorcycle
enthusiasts should have a plan in place for their
vehicles. Although fall sees many riders pack their
bikes into the garage to wait out the winter, many others
see no reason to quit the great outdoors just because
colder weather is on the way.
No matter which path riders take and when they take it,
preparation is essential when riding motorcycles. Here are
a few pointers for riders to consider once the leaves have
started to change color.
Layer up
Layering clothing is a key component of riding a motorcycle
in colder temperatures. Many people are not very active on
the back of a bike, so they will not generate enough heat on
their own. Layering clothing will take the bite out of frosty
winds and any precipitation that happens to be falling.
Layer clothing so that you will feel comfortable, maybe even
a bit warm when you are just standing around outdoors. A
rst layer of thermal or eece is a good idea. Then layer
other materials as needed for comfort. Just do not wear so
many layers that your mobility is compromised. If layers are
not keeping you warm enough, invest in heated clothing.
The outermost layer you wear should be weather- and
wind-resistant. Wind chill can quickly sap your energy and
cut your ride considerably. Leather clothing will t the bill
in most cases, but a rain suit or some other waterproof
material also may be necessary at times.
Leaves
Leaves can be a signicant hazard to riders in the
fall. Damp leaves can make a slippery mess of roads,
particularly on turns and curves.
Avoid all piles of leaves, as you do not know what may be
hiding beneath them. Consider wet leaves as dangerous as
black ice, as soggy leaves can be just as slippery.
Salt and sand
Road maintenance crews will use sand and salt to keep
roads clear when snow and ice forms. Avoid riding on salty
roads because the salt can corrode chrome and paint. If
you choose to do any winter riding, apply a coat of wax to
all parts of the motorcycle before going for a ride. This will
help protect it and enable any salt to be easily wiped off
after riding.
Standing water
If it rains or snows lightly after an extended period of
dryness, oils in the road can come to the surface, making
roads quite slick. In addition, stay on the lookout for puddles
and other standing water. While motorcycle tires are good
for displacing water, they still can hydroplane. Stay focused
when riding on wet surfaces.
Foraging animals
One potential hazard riders may not consider is wildlife.
Harvested crops reduce easy food sources, and animals
may be on the move looking for food. Deer can be pushed
out of elds by hunters. A collision with a deer can damage
a car, never mind a motorcycle. Always use caution in rural
areas, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Winterizing
If you choose to store your bike when the weather starts to
get cold, remember to put a fuel stabilizer in the tank, ll the
tank with gas and hook the battery up to a battery tender.
This will ensure the bike is ready to hit the road when the
temperatures warm up.
Cold weather riding tips for bikers
Riders should exercise caution when riding
motorcycles in late autumn and winter.
The benets to car loan preapproval
W
hen purchasing a new vehicle, many people
choose to nance their purchases. Much like
buying a house, nancing a vehicle requires
buyers to produce a down payment and then make
monthly payments on the vehicle until the balance of the
loan has been repaid in full. Financing is a must for many
consumers, who otherwise could not afford to purchase a
new or reliable preowned vehicle. And just like prospective
homeowners can benet from being preapproved for loans
before they begin searching for a new home, auto buyers
also benet in various ways from getting preapproved for
a car loan before they begin their search for their next set
of wheels.
Preapproval smooths out the negotiation process.
Few people enjoy haggling with car salesmen over the
price of a new or preowned vehicle, and that process is
even more difcult when buyers arent entirely sure of how
much money they have to spend. When nancing your
vehicle with a preapproved loan, however, the process of
negotiation can go much more smoothly, as you and the
salesman know you only have a predetermined amount
of money to spend. Ask the price to get the car off the
lot, and then you can negotiate from there if you feel it
necessary.
Preapproval cuts back on time spent at the dealership.
A car dealerships nance and insurance ofce is where
buyers sit once they have told the salesman they want to
buy the car and nance their purchase. Those who have
not been preapproved often must sit through a sales pitch
in this ofce or sit patiently as the salesman goes back
and forth with the nance manager as you negotiate the
nal cost of the vehicle. However, when you have been
preapproved for a loan, no such back and forth needs to
take place, and you can cite your preapproval as a reason
you dont want to commit to the extra add-ons that many
dealers attempt to sell their buyers.
Preapproval means the car is yours when you take it
off the lot. Dealers are sometimes too quick to put keys in
a buyers hand, and buyers with poor credit sometimes are
allowed to drive a car off the lot only to nd out days later
that the lender rejected their application, at which time
they must return the vehicle or return to the dealership to
apply for a new loan, which will almost certainly come with
a higher interest rate. Preapproval allows buyers to avoid
this frustrating and sometimes embarrassing process.
Preapproval reduces the risk that you will overspend.
Many a new or preowned car buyer has fallen in love
with a vehicle and spent more than they should have to
make the car their own. Preapproval greatly reduces the
chances of this happening, as you know before you begin
your search that your lender will only approve a loan for so
much money. This can help buyers stick to a budget and
avoid buying a car they cant afford.

take place, and you can cite your preapproval as a reason
you dont want to commit to the extra add-ons that many
dealers attempt to sell their buyers.
The 2015
Dodge Challenger
M
uscle car enthusiasts may not
be able to resist the 2015 Dodge
Challenger, which affords drivers
even more opportunities to fulll their need for
power behind the wheel. Newly available for
2015 Challengers is the 6.4-liter HEMI

V8
engine, which comes with an estimated 485
horsepower.
For those drivers who dont want quite so
much power at their feet, the 2015 Challenger
also is available with a 305-horsepower,
3.6-liter Pentastar

V6 engine or a
375-horsepower, 5.7-liter HEMI

V8 engine.
Drivers new to muscle cars may be intimidated
by such power, but the 2015 Challenger
can quell those fears, as its class-exclusive
ve-link rear suspension and available
high-performance steering, suspension and
Brembo four-piston brakes gives drivers
complete control.
But whats under the hood is not the only
impressive aspect of the latest incarnation
of the Challenger, as Dodge completely
redesigned the interior for 2015. The Tic-Toc-
Tach retro-style gauges ank the new class-
exclusive seven-inch recongurable digital
cluster display, providing a multitude of vehicle
information that includes 0-60 time, reaction
time and g-force meter, all features that should
thrill muscle car enthusiasts.
Drivers of the 2015 Challenger will no doubt
be impressed by the standard Keyless Enter
N Go
TM
with Start/Stop button and perforated
leather-wrapped steering wheel. Heated
steering wheels also are available, as are
steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. An
available 8.4-inch UConnect

Touchscreen
allows drivers to adjust the performance of
the engine, transmission, steering response,
and traction control. The screen also allows
drivers to view 3-D navigation guidance and

hot spot.
While the vehicle interior is sure to impress,
the 2015 Challenger also will catch the eye
of fellow motorists and pedestrians as drivers
hit the road. The heritage-inspired split grille
surround and aggressive brow designs are
back on the 2015 Challenger, which will
surely harken auto enthusiasts back to the
muscle car heyday of the early 1970s. A
classic SHAKER hood with high-ow cold air
induction adds to that throwback appeal.
But while the 2015 Challenger pays homage
to the muscle cars of yesteryear, it does so
with 21st century safety features. The 2015
Challenger boasts more than 70 available
advanced safety and security features,
including Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross
Path Detection and class-exclusive Forward
Collision Warning and Adaptive Cruise
Control.
Though muscle cars glory days may have
come and gone, the 2015 Dodge Challenger
is doing its part to ensure muscle car
enthusiasts can still get their ll of power on
the open road.
Did you know?
M
any major auto manufacturers provide bumper-to-bumper factory warranties that
expire once a car is three years old or exceeds 36,000 miles, and such milestones are
important gures for preowned vehicle shoppers to consider before buying their next
preowned vehicle. When buying a car thats more than three years old or one that has close
to or more than 36,000 miles on its odometer, prospective buyers should ask for the vehicles
maintenance records before making a purchase. Since many vehicles need their rst signicant
servicing somewhere around 40,000 miles, its important for preowned vehicle buyers to know
what theyre buying and just how soon they might be making repairs after buying a vehicle.

Dont miss out on these
auto insurance discounts
T
here is seemingly no end in sight
with regard to the rising costs of
owning an automobile. From the
cost of the car or truck itself to the high
prices of fuel, drivers increasingly are on
the hunt for ways to curtail the costs of
owning an automobile. One way to save
some cash is to take advantage of
auto insurance discounts you may be
eligible for.
Auto insurance company fulllment is at
record high. However, many discounts
may still be available, even if drivers or
their agents may overlook them. Fierce
competition among insurance providers
continually adds to the bevy of new
discounts many are willing to offer to woo
new customers.
According to Bankrate.com, which looked
at the discounts offered by auto insurance
companies, many companies now offer
new discounts to remain competitive.
If you havent shopped around for auto
insurance recently or have not revisited
your current policy, you may be missing
out on substantial savings.
Daytime running lights: Four out of the
10 largest auto insurance companies now
offer discounts if your vehicle has daytime
running lights.
Low mileage: Dont take the car out
often? Such habits may earn you a
reward. Around 80 percent of the major
insurance companies offer discounts for
low mileage. The insurance company may
provide a mileage tracking device that
will report back the actual miles driven to
the company.
Grades: Check with your insurance
company if you have a student on the
policy. His or her good grades may qualify
you for a discount.
Occupation: Your occupation also may
entitle you to a discount on insurance.
Insurance companies believe that people
in certain occupations or those who spend
a lot of time on the road may be less likely
to take risks. Find out if your occupation
qualies.
Alumni associations and clubs: Certain
organizations have teamed with insurance
providers to offer discounts to members.
Therefore, if you are in a fraternal group,
a credit union, an alumni association,
or some other organization, you may
eligible for certain discounts. Check with
your insurance company for their afliate
groups, or contact the organization to
which you belong for
more information.
Multiple policies: Many insurance
companies will offer a discount if you
group your policies together into a bundle.
Having homeowner insurance, auto
insurance and life insurance through one
company, for example, can earn you a
substantial discount.
Insurance companies have many other
discounts available if you ask. For
example, if your vehicle has an antitheft
system or environmentally friendly
components, you may be eligible for a
discount. Customer loyalty, paperless
billing, paying all your bill at once, being a
current or former member of the military
or if your vehicle is a new model year
also may make you eligible for discounts
that can drastically reduce the cost of
your policy.
Drowsy driving can be as
dangerous as driving impaired
T
he public is well educated about the
dangers of driving while impaired by
medication, alcohol or illegal drugs.
But drivers may not be aware that driving
while tired can be just as dangerous.
Driving when tired can be a fatal mistake.
Just as alcohol or drugs can slow down
reaction time, impair judgment and increase
the risk of accident, so, too, can being
tired behind the wheel. Drowsy driving is
reportedly what caused the fatal crash
in June 2014 between a limousine and a
Walmart truck that ended the life of comic
James McNair and seriously injured fellow
comedian Tracy Morgan. The driver, Kevin
Roper, was going 20 miles over the speed
limit and was almost at his drive time limit,
according to preliminary reports by the
National Transportation Safety Board.
According to the U.S. National Highway
Trafc Safety Administration, about 100,000
car crashes in the United States each year
occur as the result of an overly tired driver.
Various studies demonstrate that drivers
who have remained awake for 18 hours prior
to driving mimic the driving performance of
intoxicated motorists. In fact, drowsy driving
can be confused with driving with a high
blood alcohol content.
Sleepiness can arise relatively quickly, and
according to Thomas Balkin, PhD, director
of the behavioral biology program at the
Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and
a leading expert on sleep and fatigue, its
difcult for drivers to assess just how sleepy
they are.
Sleepiness affects the part of the brain
responsible for judgment and self-
awareness, he says. When youve reached
the stage where you are ghting sleep, the
effect of any method of reviving yourself can
be very short-lived.
Furthermore, people do not have to be in
a deep sleep to actually be asleep behind
the wheel. Micro-sleeps occur when certain
brain cells temporarily shut down for a few
seconds. A person is not completely asleep
but in a sort of fog as if they are asleep.
When sleepiness sets in, the best course
of action is to pull off the road. Opening the
window, turning on the radio or blasting cold
air is, at best, only a temporary solution.
If driving with passengers and feelings of
sleepiness appear, hand the keys over to a
passenger and have them take over driving,
if possible. Otherwise, a short nap and a
cup of coffee can be used in combination to
increase alertness.
Its also a good idea to avoid beginning a
long road trip in mid-afternoon around the
hours of two or three oclock.
Driving while tired may not seem as
harmful as driving while under the
inuence of alcohol. However, both
can affect reaction times signicantly.

Take a peek at the
2015 Chevy Volt
The 2015 Chevrolet Volt. Image

General Motors.
U
nlike traditional hybrid vehicles,
the 2015 Chevrolet Volt employs a
unique propulsion that allows drivers
to drive on pure electricity. When the time
comes to make longer trips, Volt owners can
seamlessly switch to gasoline.
As many drivers become more eco-
conscious, the Volt gures to become even
more popular. Chevrolet reports that on a
full charge, the 2015 Volt can get an EPA-
estimated 38 miles gas-free, and Chevy
notes that many Volt drivers regularly
average 900 miles between trips to the gas
station to ll their tanks.
But its not just savings at the pump that
is attracting drivers to the Volt. Employing
a unique design inspired by an airplane
cockpit, the 2015 Volts interior surrounds
passengers with two interactive seven-
inch diagonal color LCD screens, including
the Driver Information Center behind the
steering wheel and the center panel touch-
screen with efciency feedback, driving
mode selections, available rear camera
display, and even some entertainment
options.
Though a midsize car, the Volt may
surprise drivers with its storage capacity.
That includes storage bins as well as door
panel storage and even an umbrella pocket
perfect for rainy days.
Though many Volt drivers are likely attracted
to its eco-friendly features, those motorists
who love their bells and whistles wont be
disappointed by the 2015 Volt, which comes
standard with a new OnStar 4G LTE system
with a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot (including a
three-month data trial subscription). The
Chevrolet MyLink Radio allows drivers to
access Pandora

Internet Radio, Stitcher

SmartRadio
TM
, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, or
organize their music library with Gracenote

.
Incoming text messages can be read aloud
to drivers, reducing their risk of accident and
injury.
But as great as such gadgets can be, drivers
of the Volt are most attracted to its status
as an electric car. Drivers who choose the
120V charging unit, which comes standard
with the 2015 Volt, can fully charge their
vehicles in 10 to 16 hours, and the plug
ts any 120V electrical outlet. Those who
upgrade to the 240V charging unit can fully
charge their vehicles in approximately four
hours, and the 240V charging station will be
professionally installed in drivers homes.
Electric cars may be the future of
the automotive industry, and the 2015
Chevrolet Volt is helping to blaze that trail.
Falling leaves present a
beautiful safety hazard
Watching leaves turn brilliant shades of color
and fall from the trees is a favorite activity
each fall. Drivers travel near and far to
witness spectacular and colorful displays of
fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in
their respective areas of the country.
While falling leaves can be a sight to behold,
those leaves can become a nuisance to
drivers in various ways. Understanding
certain inconveniences and safety risks
posed by falling leaves can help motorists
protect their vehicle and themselves.
Staining
Leaves can do more than just stain
driveways; they also can damage a vehicles
paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other
chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay
on a car for an extended period of time, they
can cause an outline stain and damage to
the paint.
Its important to manually pick leaves off of
the cars surface right after they fall. Do not
sweep them away; otherwise the leaves
can scratch the paint surface. When all the
leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash
and dry the vehicle.
Should stains be present already, use a
commercial leaf-stain remover or automotive
paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time.
Clogging
Leaves that fall can become trapped in air
intake vents, eventually impeding ow and
causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove
of the windshield by the windshield wipers
should be removed. Use a high-powered
shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are
imbedded in
the venting.
Check other areas of the car where leaves
can become problematic, such as under the
vehicle or in the rear exhaust pipe.
Slippery surfaces
The Car Care Council notes that wet
leaves on the surface of roadways can be
hazardous. Wet leaves can make roadways
quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways
when snow is falling. Drivers should slow
down when roads are covered with wet
leaves and take turns and off-ramps more
carefully.
Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they
tend to accumulate at the edges of roads,
where they easily can obscure curbs or
street markings. Leaves may ll potholes,
giving the false impression that a road is
smooth and causing damage to tires and
suspension systems when drivers drive over
them.
Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but
they can complicate driving and fall car care.
Motorists should keep their cars clear of
leaves and use caution on roadways.
Autumn and
driving seem to
be tailor-made
for one another,
and they can be if
motorists exercise
caution when
driving near fallen
leaves.

When is seat belt
replacement necessary?
S
eat belts and air bags are safety devices that serve
to limit or prevent injury in the event of an automobile
accident. Drivers and passengers tend to take these
devices for granted, but these safety measures can greatly
reduce a persons risk of injury or even death.
Although seat belts do not degrade as quickly as parts
of a vehicle that need frequent servicing, there are some
instances when seat belts should be replaced.
Seat belts, like car seats and air bags, are considered by
the National Highway Trafc Safety Administration to be
single-use items. Seat belts are designed to work just once
protecting and immobilizing a passenger in the event of
a crash.
Seat belts are more advanced than they were when rst
introduced in vehicles. Early seat belts were options on
cars. It wasnt until Saab rst introduced seat belts tted as
standard in 1958 that the practice became commonplace.
Since then, seat belts have been redesigned many times to
make them even more effective. They have a pretensioner,
which reels back slack on the seat belt. Pretensioners
preemptively tighten the belt to prevent the occupant from
jerking forward in a crash. They can be activated in a bad
crash or any crash severe enough to deploy an air bag.
Seat belts also are equipped with locking retractors, which
afford the seated occupant some movement while still
providing a means to limit movement in the event of a
crash. Retractors equipped with inertial locking mechanisms
stop the belt from extending off the reel during severe
deceleration.
Both of these safety belt components may effectively work
only once. After an accident, the ability of pretensioners and
retractors may be compromised. The fabric seat belt itself
also may have been marginally stretched out in the crash.
Its adviseable to replace any seat belts that were in use
during a crash to ensure the belts will offer the same
measure of protection should a collision occur in the future.
Some manufacturers also recommend changing all of the
safety belts in the vehicle, even if they werent in use at
the time of the crash. The vehicle owners manual should
include recommendations regarding when to change seat
belts. If it does not, drivers can speak with a dealership
mechanic.
Seat belts that are frayed or do not operate properly,
regardless of whether or not they were involved in a crash,
also should be replaced. Some safety experts advise having
seat belts inspected and possibly replaced after 10 to 15
years of use. One can never tell how older seat belts will
stand up in the event of an accident. If the seat belts have
a built-in indicator, verify that they have not been stretched
during regular wear to warrant replacement.
Seat belts can protect passengers only if they are in
good working form. They likely need replacement after
a collision.
Seat belts can help save lives, but only if they are working effectively.
How to dig out your
car after a storm
T
he arrival of cooler, shorter days is
often a precursor to winter storms
dominated by snowfall. A snow-
covered landscape can make for an
appealing image. But heavy snowfall also
makes for extra work, especially for drivers
who must dig their vehicles out of the snow
after each storm.
Some people live in suburban areas where
they can park their cars in driveways or
garages, while others live in cities and have
to park on the street, where snow plows
can do a wonderful job of burying vehicles
underneath mounds of snow. Rescuing a car
or truck from a pile of snow can be tricky and
time-consuming, but there is a process that
can make the job easier.
Begin by clearing out the tail pipe of the
car. This is a vital rst step because failure
to do so can back harmful carbon monoxide
gas and other fumes into the car. Take the
time to clear out the rear of the car, including
the taillights, so you will have improved
visibility.
When the exhaust pipe is clear, turn
on the car. Some people prefer to put the
defroster on right away. Others wait until the
vehicle warms up before doing so. Having a
warm car will melt some of the accumulated
ice and snow and make it easier for you to
clear the car.
The right tools make faster work of the
task at hand. A shovel is a necessity, and a
telescoping snow broom/ice scraper can be
helpful. This allows you to safely push the
snow off the roof of the car. Some regions
ne drivers who do not remove snow from
the roofs or hoods of their cars, so take the
time to clean such snow before driving.
Work from the top of the vehicle down.
Otherwise, you will end up negating all of
your work by throwing fresh snow on the
areas you already cleared.
By now the defrosters should have kicked
in sufciently enough to make it simple
to clear snow from the windshield and
rear window. Use some deicing windshield
uid to dislodge wiper blades if they have
frozen to the windshield. Some drivers leave
their wiper blades standing on end and away

How to stay safe on wintry roads
M
any people will remember the winter of
2013-14 for all the wrong reasons. Record
low temperatures and heavy snowfall were
the story last winter. With winter now on the horizon
once again, many motorists are looking for ways to
ensure their daily commutes or holiday trips to visit
family and friends are as safe as possible.
When wintry conditions, including snowfall,
compromise driving conditions, its best for
motorists to stay home. But avoiding roadways
altogether is not always an option, so motorists who
simply must venture out onto the roadways this
winter can employ the following strategies to ensure
they safely arrive at their destinations.
Consider winter tires. Many drivers are unsure
if they need winter tires. All-season tires may
sufce for those drivers who live in regions where
heavy snowfall is uncommon. But winter tires are
designed to perform when the temperatures are
especially cold and in driving conditions featuring
ice, slush and snow. Drivers who live in regions
where snowfall is signicant or even expected to be
signicant may want to install winter tires just to be
on the safe side. Some drivers mistakenly believe
that vehicle features such as anti-lock braking
systems and traction control make their tires more
capable of handling wintry roads. But such features
do not provide more traction. ABS and traction
control only prevent drivers from over-braking or
overpowering the traction of their tires. Only better
tires will improve traction.
Drive slowly. Many drivers mistakenly believe they
only need to drive slow when snow is falling. But
winter weather can make roadways unsafe even in
areas that have not witnessed a single snowake
fall from the sky. Wet winter roads can quickly turn
into icy winter roads, and no ABS system or traction
control device can prevent a car thats traveling
too fast from skidding out. Poor visibility is another
reason to drive slowly in winter. Peripheral vision
is often compromised when driving in winter, as
dirt, salt or sand buildup on windshields and side
windows and mirrors can make it hard for motorists
to fully view their surroundings. Even if your vision
is not compromised, a fellow motorists might be.
So ease up on the gas pedal in winter so you have
more time to react to potentially adverse conditions.
Dont drive too closely to other motorists. In
addition to driving slowly, motorists also should
leave extra room between their vehicles and the
vehicles in front of them. In such conditions, for
every 10 miles per hour drive a minimum of four car
lengths behind the motorist in front of you. So if you
are driving 50 miles per hour, be sure to leave 20
car lengths between you and the car ahead of you.
This gives you ample time to react and builds in
some extra response time should your visibility be
compromised.
Maintain your vehicle. A vehicle should be
maintained regardless of the season, but its
especially important that your vehicle perform at its
peak in winter. A vehicles battery and windshield
wipers are a winter drivers best friend, but only
if they are operating at optimal capacity. Being
stranded on a roadside in winter is more dangerous
than in any other time of year. Thats because
driver visibility is more compromised in winter, and
it can be hard for motorists to see or avoid vehicles
on the side of the road. Maintain proper uid levels
and make sure your battery is charged and the gas
tank is full before making any winter trips.
Wintry conditions often make driving especially
hazardous. But drivers who adopt certain habits
when driving in winter can greatly reduce their risk
of accidents.

announced plans to cater to a specic
market of North American families with the
introduction of a midsize SUV concept called
the CrossBlue. In addition to presenting
another buying choice in the ever-popular
SUV and light truck market, Volkswagen also
will be helping to increase the number of
American jobs at its Tennessee plant, which
was awarded the production of the new SUV.
The Volkswagen Group will be investing
a total of approximately $900 million in
the production of the seven-passenger
SUV, creating 2,000 additional jobs in
the Chattanooga, TN, plant as a result.
Production should begin by late 2016, and
the CrossBlue will target buyers of the
Chevy Traverse, Ford Explorer and Toyota
Highlander, among others.
Plans to develop a new SUV and base
production in the United States have been
in the works for several years, and in July
2014, Volkswagen nally announced plans to

C
ome autumn, thousands of motorists
take to the highways and backroads
to experience the ever-changing
landscape made beautiful by leaves
changing colors. Fall foliage road trips make
for a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon.
With cameras in hand and provisions at the
ready, motorists can make the most of their
next fall foliage road trip.
Know when to go. Learn the best times
of the year to see the peak leaf colors.
Mountainous regions and many located in
northern latitudes will see changes in leaf
color earlier than other regions. Drivers
living in certain areas of Canada, regions of
the Rocky Mountains or in particular parts of
New England can expect to witness leaves
changing color as early as September, while
much of the midwest can expect peak color
in mid- to late-October. Southern regions
may not see leaves change color until
November.
Aim for a weekday. Many people plan fall
foliage road trips on the weekend. These
leafers or peepers, as theyre sometimes
referred to, ood normally empty rural areas
and can easily cause trafc jams. Schedule
your own trip for a weekday so you can
avoid most of the crowds and enjoy a more
serene environment for hiking excursions or
countryside visits.
Book accommodations early. If you plant
to stay overnight, book your trip as early
as possible and dont be surprised if costs
are high. Autumn is not only a peak time for
leaf color changes, but also its a prime time
for vacationers interested in comfortable
temperatures and amazing scenery, so
autumn lodging rates may be equal to or
exceed the rates charged during the height
of summer vacation season. Verify room
rates and openings well in advance if you
have your heart set on staying in prime leaf
color country.
Employ a few tricks of the photography
trade. Fall foliage may be at its most vibrant
at sunrise and sunset when the sun is low in
the sky and will not cast much glare. Slightly
overcast days also may help leaves colors
pop, but too much cloud cover may cause a
lack of vibrancy in leaf color.
Watch the weather. Autumn weather can
be unpredicable. Some days it may be crisp,
while other days it will be hot. Sometimes
you may experience hot and cold weather
on the same day. Dress in layers so that
you can be comfortable and shed or add
layers as necessary.
Explore different spots. Do not take the
same route or visit the same towns each
year. Vary your trips to experience a greater
range of autumn magic.
Plan your fall
foliage road trip
Autumn is a great time to embark on road trips and
take in the awesome spectacle of fall foliage.
Winter prep checklist
F
all is a time to prepare homes,
vehicles and even our psyches
for the arrival of winter. To get
your car cold-weather ready, take the
following precautions now.
Tire pressure can drop in cold weather.
When tires are underinated, you lose fuel
efciency, so monitor and maintain tire
pressure throughout the winter.
Those who live in particularly cold climates
should switch from all-season to winter tires.
Much as you wear winter boots to provide
more traction and protection than sneakers,
so should you equip your vehicle with tires
that will stand up to winter terrain.
Check on the status of your battery and its
starting power. Cold weather an put more
strain on a car battery. A battery that is
already weak may not turn over when you
need it most.
Replace worn wiper blades and
upgrade to a windshield uid that is rated for
subzero temperatures. Each of these items
will improve visibility when winter precipitation
is making its presence felt.
Schedule an oil change at the beginning of
winter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weather starts
and, if coupled with low coolant levels, can
make it difcult for the engine to turn over.
Keep jumper cables, a battery booster pack
and warning cones in your vehicle. These can
come to the rescue if your battery dies and
youre stranded on the side of the road.
While youre stocking the trunk or cargo
bed, include a shovel, sand or cat litter,
a ashlight, an ice scraper, water, and a
blanket.
