ABSTRACT

Cimandiri River i n Palabuhanratu Bay, West Java, Indonesia is the largest river in that area.
By 2008, beside the estuary, a steam power plant started to be constructed together with coal
port. Revetment was built along the river and breakwater was built at the mouth of estuary. The
study is aimed to assess temporal dynamics of the estuary and various factors that may cause
these dynamics. Field data were collected by power plant designer since 2002 to 2010 in
Palabuhanratu Bay and Cimandiri Estuary, comprising of sedimentation data i.e. total suspended
solid and turbidity; hydrooceanological data, i.e. waves, tides and bathimetry; as well as
meteorological data, i.e. rainfall, air temperature and wind speed and direction The
sedimentation data were tabulated to draw their trend, simulation was done to show dominant
waves and sediment transport. Remotely sensed data were analysed to draw the dynamic of
estuary dimension and shoreline changes. The Cimandiri Estuary dynamics showed relation with
Palabuhanratu Bay dynamics, i.e tidal type and speed of tidal current. Since the bay position
facing the Indian Ocean, it can potentially be influenced by extreme waves which resulted
considerable damage. The estuary dynamics marked by sedimentation tent to fluctuate with the
highest value in November 2002, 2008 and 2010. The turbidity also showed to increase in
October 2002 and the mouth estuary became shallower, ranges between 05 3.5 m. The mouth of
estuary width varied between 17 m - 30 m depends on the season. These estuary dynamics is
predicted to influent its ecological function as migratory route of freshwater eel (Anguilla spp).
