Q1) What are fluids ?
Q2) How is thrust different from pressure ?
Q3) State the relationship between pressure and area for a constant force applied.
Q4) What are the three factors on which buoyant force depends ?
Q5) What is the S.I unit of upthrust / buoyant force ?
Q6) Why is relative density unitless ?
Q7) Give scientific reason for the following:
a) Sleepers are used below the rails.
b) A wide steel belt is provided over the wheel of an army tank.
c) It is easier to swim in sea water than in river water.
d) A ship made of iron does not sink in water, but an iron nail sinks.
e) A sharp knife cuts better than a blunt knife.
f) Camels can walk easily on desert

Solve the following questions:

Q1) A iron cuboid has a weight of 1kg. The dimensions of the cuboid are 20 cm x 10 cm x 5 cm.
Calculate: (i) maximum pressure (ii) minimum pressure exerted by the cuboid. ( g= 10 m/s2).
Q2) Calculate the pressure at a depth of 100 m below the surface of sea. The density of sea water is
1024 Kg/m3, g = 9.8 m/s2.
Q3) The mass of a block made of certain material is 12.6 kg and volume is 14 x 10 -3 m3. Will the block
float or sink in water? Give reason for your answer.
Q4) A body of volume 100 cm3 is immersed completely in water.Calculate the upthrust on the body.
Density of water = 103 kg/m3 , g = 9.8 m/s2.
Q5) The dimensions of a wooden block are 2 m x 0.25 m x 0.10 m. If the relative density of wood is 0.6,
Calculate the mass of block.
Q6) The pressure due to atmosphere is 1.013 x 105 Pa. Find the force exerted by the atmosphere on the top
surface of a table 2 m long and 1 m wide.
