Furqan chose to do a practical life activity of spooning dry grains between containers. He carried the tray with containers and a spoon to the table. Furqan spooned the grains between the containers several times, picking up any grains that fell, until finishing the activity. Practical life activities help children develop independence, balance, stability, and fine motor skills.

Furqan has been repeatedly working with practical life activities.
Practical life activities are those
activities which people normally do in using and maintaining the home environment in which they live. In our classroom children work with these activities of their own choice at their own pace. This morning Furqan decided to do spooning dry grains. He took the tray which includes one big container with some dry oats in it and two smaller containers and a spoon. The goal of this activity is to divide the grains into two containers without dropping any on the tray. Furqan carried the tray and sat at a table. He took the lids off from all three containers and started to divide the grains into two containers with the spoon. He did this repeatedly, a few times he dropped some grains on the tray, immediately he picked those up with his hand. Every time he finished dividing into two container he poured those back in the big container. When he had enough he tidied up everything and put the tray back on the shelf ready for other children to use. Choosing their own work gives children skills and independence, carrying a tray with two hands when the equipments has to be kept level gives children a degree of balance and stability in walking and an ability to grasp with two hands.

Throughout this activity Furqan is showing that he can choose his own activity and can carry a tray without dropping anything on the floor, increasing his fine motor skills, developing his concentration and independence. Written by Teacher Rosy, November, 2014
