Overview
Topic and Overarching Goal:
The topic is Food and Health/ Safety. The overreaching goal is to have the children know that certain foods
are not only healthy and helpful for her body but they also taste good too. This will allow them the
opportunity to be able to make a fake plate of healthy food.
Behavioral Objectives:
1. When provided with grocery ads the children will be able to identify at least four healthy foods.
2. When provided with the correct materials the children will be able to make one healthy plate
3. When provided with information the children will be able to identify at least one safety tip on keeping
our hands clean.
Preparing The Activity
Observation and Assessment:
What interests, assessments, prior knowledge, observations, and/or experiences have you observed to explain
why you have chosen this activity?

I did an assessment on the children by asking them questions like the move we watched in class did.
I asked the children about an apple and what color it is and how it looks. Then I asked the victor
what is lettuce and he looked at me and walked away. That tells me he doesnt know what it is or
he was just done talking to me. I also asked a few others like Angel and Mariella about Cauliflower
and they looked at me funny and didnt really know what it was. This will be an activity the
children will be able to do in identifying the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods. I
decided to do this activity for the children to have a name with the picture of the different
vegetables we will be talking about.

Activity/ies Description: What are you doing for your activity/ies? Describe in very specific step-by-step detail,
using numbers or bullets. Write descriptions as if you will be giving instructions to a substitute teacher:
Food
I will have the children look through the grocery ads. Then I will have them cut out different
vegetables and fruit to be able to identify the difference if they are healthy or non-healthy. I really
want to have them focus on fruit and vegetables. They will be using scissors to cut out the
pictures and this will also help boost their fine motor skills. I will have this activity set up over at
the art center. I will also be bringing in the different ads for the children to cut out the different
vegetables and fruits.
Health
I will be talking to the kids about the importance of hand washing and how that can keep our
bodies from getting sick and spreading germs. I will have each child stick their hand in a bowl of
lotion and glitter. Then I will ask the children to rub their hands together. Then I will ask the
children to shake hands with one another and they will be able to see the germs going to the other
person or surface. I will also be having the children go in and wash their hands with soap and
water to see the germs washing away. I will also be asking the children questions about what they
thought about the germs. I will be asking if they know how the germs get spread. This activity can
be done at a circle time or when we are at free choice time. Im open to whenever it fits in to the
schedule.

2nd Day Changes: Specifically and concretely explain how your activity/ies will change for the 2nd day. How
will you extend and expand the learning?
Food
Today I will be asking the children to make a plate with all the different cutouts that we had
done the day before. I want to be able to see the children being able to pick healthy food to
put on their plate to eat. I will also see if it is possible to have a veggie tray brought into the
classroom to allow the children to try healthy veggies on their plate as well. I feel this will
allow the children the opportunity to try something different and being able to make their
own plate. I will be asking the children questions about why they are making the plate they
are making and what is good for their body and what is not so healthy for their body.
I will be using the art center to have the children making a plate using pictures of the vegetables
and fruit.
I will be using real vegetables for the children to try on a plate as part of the healthy choices for
eating.

Health
Today I will be reading a book to the children about the importance of germs. The book I
will be reading is called (A Germs Journey by M.D., Thom Rooke). The children will be at
one of the circle times. I will also sing a song with them called This Is the Way We Wash
Our Hands I will also be talking to them about what we will be doing at the art center with
the pictures we cut out the day before.

Music and Movement:

This Is The Way We Wash Our Hands
(Tune: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush)
This is the way we wash our hands,
Wash our hands, wash our hands.
This is the way we wash our hands,
We wash them nice and clean.
Continue with:
First we get our hands wet, hands wet, hands wet
This is the way we use soap, use soap, use soap
etc.

Planning Assessment
How will you assess your behavioral objectives?
I know I will be able to write down all the names of the children on paper and put a check mark on the
children who can identify at least four healthy foods.
I will be taking pictures of the children who are making a healthy plate so that will be my evidence of
assessing the one who will at least make one healthy plate.
I will be asking the children questions to see what they know about keeping their hands clean. I will also
be reminding them of the things we talked about the day before. For example
before eating or touching food in any way (like if you're helping cook or bake)
after using the bathroom
after blowing your nose or coughing or putting your hands in your mouth
after touching any pets or animals
after playing outside
after visiting a sick relative or friend
Creativity
Explain why your plan enhances a childs creativity:
The activity will talk about all the things we can do with our hands. For example playing with toys, holding
objects like pencils and drinking glasses, playing in the sand, and shaking hands. I can also be asking the
children to think about all the things that they have touched today. I will also be explaining that our hands and
body pick up a lot of germs that hide in the things that we touch. I will also tell them that we cant see germs but
germs can make us sick. When you have germs on your hands, you can pass them to other people without even
knowing it and make them sick. The germs can make you sick by getting into your body each time you touch
your food or put your hands in your mouth.

Planning for Implementation

What center or places within the classroom will you be utilizing?
I will be using the art center
I will be using the rug area
I will also be using the snack tables

List the materials you need to supply:

Lotion
A Germs Journey
Music This is the way we wash our hands
Grocery ads
Paper plates
Veggies
List the materials you would like to have the lab school supply:
Scissors
Chair to sit on
Glue
Glitter
Address the documentation to be completed (how, when, who, what?):
How I will not assume that the children will know how to wash their hands after touching things without
them being introduced. I will need to talk to them and ask them different questions for them to gain the
knowledge. I will also need to talk to them about the safety of the activity. We will be using lotion and
glitter we cannot try to touch anyone in the face because that will hurt our eyes.
When Im with the children I will be asking open-ended questions about germs. They will be able to gain
the knowledge of handwashing.
Who will be with the children at the time of the circle time; will be Brenda, Lindsay, children, and Maria.
Who will learn about germs and healthy foods.
What will be documented will be my objectives along with information to help my three portfolio
children. Documentation the childrens work will be with my phone taking pictures and a chart listing my
four healthy foods. I will also be taking notes to link with the pictures I will be taking.
