Introduction
Ask Students what the 5 senses are, making sure they use the
words see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. Indicate that in
todays lesson were going to be talking about the sense of
smell.
Ask students what organ they use to smell?
Ask students what are some good things they have smelled
today?
Ask students what are some bad things they have smelled
today?
Students should be able to recognize that they use their nose
for smelling, and should be able to identify some good and bad
things they have smelled today.
Warn kids that they are going to be blindfolded for the next
activity.
Body
Whats that Smell?
- Students will be asked to stay seated in their desk, and
to put on one of the blindfolds provided.
- The teacher will bring around 10 different items that
have a strong scent
- After the teacher has made their way to each desk, and
every student has had the opportunity to smell each
object, students will be asked to write down what they
thought the object was.
- Once all 10 items have been passed around they
students can take of the blindfolds, and the teacher will
go through each smell one by one.
- Students will have the opportunity to tell the class what
they thought the smell was and then the teacher will do
the reveal
Ask students how close their guesses were
Students will probably be eager to smell all the smells so make
sure they are sitting in their seats. Students should be able to
identify some of the smells but have difficulties with others.
Good Vs. Bad Smells
- Students are seated in there desks
- Teacher will have smart board activity already cued up
- The smart board activity will have pictures of different
smells, and as a class students will have to identify what
is a good smell and what is a bad smell.
- After the Smart board activity Teacher will hand out
pictures of different smelling things, and as a group
students will have to circle the pictures that are good
smells
Assess whether or not students can distinguish between good
and bad smells. Ensure students not doing the worksheet while
the smart board activity is on the board. Students should be
able to circle the correct objects that smell good.
Animals and Smelling:
- Students are still sitting in their seats.
-Ask students if they think animals or humans have better

Lesson

Students should be answering the questions and actively

engaged in discussion.
Closure
Ask each student in the class to list one good smell.
This will ensure that students had some understanding of
learning objective #2
Observing how they did during the group discussion, how close
their smelling predictions were, and if they were able to circle
the right objects on the smartboard activity.
Tell students how they did on the smell testing, and if as a class
they identified the right objects on the powerpoint.
Tell students they did a good job, and warn them that next
class we are going to be focusing on hearing. Ask students
what organ we use to hear?
