1. Rationale: Why is this lesson relevant at this time with these students?
This lesson is the first in a unit exploring animals. An introduction to mammals will help students to
understand the variety of animal types there are and what kinds of mammals live in the area around
them.

Stuffed animals, PowerPoint presentation, Worksheets: Types of Mammals and Carnivore, Herbivore
and Omnivore Identification, word search, coloring utensils

5. Lesson Development

Introduction: How will you introduce this lesson in a manner that


engages students and activates their thinking?

A variety of stuffed animals brought in by teacher will be passed around.


(Bear, whale, dog, cat) Students will brainstorm some things that the stuffed
animals have in common (ie. Have fur, live around us etc.).
Introduce the idea that these are mammals. Ask if anyone knows what a
mammal is and allow for explanation.

Teaching/Learning Sequence: What steps and activities are you going


to use to help students acquire and practice the knowledge, skills
and/or attitudes needed to meet the outcome?

Go through the All About Mammals Powerpoint presentation together,


stopping to ask questions throughout and identify the mammals.

15 minutes

Distribute Types of Mammals worksheet and Carnivore, Herbivore and


Omnivore Identification worksheet. Allow for students to work individually or
in groups on their worksheets. Upon completion students may color their
worksheets or work on the word search.

15 minutes

Discuss and go over worksheets together.

5 minutes

Closure: How will you solidify the learning that has taken place and
deepen the learning process?

Ticket out the door: Hand in worksheets to drop box.


Think, Pair, Share: one thing you learned about mammals today. Ask for some
examples as a class.

5 minutes

6. Accommodations (adaptations, extensions, other ): How will you plan for students who have
learning/behaviour difficulties or require enrichment?
Worksheets will be made available on the computer. Activities for students to work on upon completion
are provided (coloring, word search). Students may work in groups or individually.
