Amnestys History
1961
Amnesty International began with one mans
outrage and his courage when he discovered that
two Portuguese students were imprisoned for
raising a toast to freedom, British lawyer Peter
Benenson published an article, The Forgotten
Prisoners in the Observer newspaper.

Within two years, 140 prisoners of conscience had

been released
By year three, that number was 329
Since then, tens of thousands of prisoners of
conscience have been freed, escaped torture and
execution, and had their basic human dignity
defended against those who would otherwise have
denied it indefinitely.

Prisoners of Conscience

I owe Amnesty International my life, Maria Gillespie

(prisoner of conscience, Uruguay, released 1974).

Amnesty did a huge job fighting for my life and

without them I would not be here now. Jack

Mapanje (Malawian poet & academic, released

in 1991).

I am very happy to be released. I am extremely grateful to

Amnesty International, who have campaigned since the beginning.
In my opinion you saved me. Eynulla Fatullayev (Azerbaijani
Journalist & prisoner of conscience, released May 26, 2011).
