ResearchershavespottedacriticallyendangeredForestOwletinNorthernpartofWesternGhats,100kmfromMumbai.
TheInternationalUnionforConservationofNature(IUCN)RedListhasdeemedthisbirdtobeatahighriskofextinction.
Tillnow,ForestOwletwasthoughttobeendemictoSatpuramountainrangesincentralIndia.ItsdiscoveryintheGhatshas
renewedhopesofitssurvival.
NaturalistSunilLaad,associatedwiththeBombayNaturalHistorySociety(BNHS),spottedtheForestOwletintheTansa
WildlifeSanctuaryinMaharashtrasPalghardistrictinOctober.Onsubsequentstudytours,visitorsandconservationiststo
Tansaweregreetedwithcallsofthebirdaround7kmfromthelocation.AresearchpaperauthoredbySunilLaadand
RohidasDagale,basedonthisfinding,willshortlybepublishedintheJournalofBNHS(JBNHS).
Rediscoveredin1997
Fornearly113years,theForestOwletwasconsideredtobeextinct,untilresearchersrediscovereditin1997inToranmal
ReserveForestnearShahadaintheSatpuraintheStatesNandurbarDistrict.
Theplacewhereitwaslocatedisadrydeciduousforest,withopenpatches,whichisverysimilartothetypicalForestOwlet
habitatintheSatpura.However,thislocationinTansaispartiallydegradedduetohumandisturbances.
ScientistsworkingonForestOwlettooareexcitedoverthediscovery.Thisclearlyhighlightstheneedtoconservecrucial
avianhabitatssuchasTansaandotherareaswhicharepotentialhomesoftheForestOwlet,saidornithologistGirishJathar.
