3rd grade: Division as Repeated Subtraction

Standards:
3.OA.A.3 Operations & Algebraic Thinking. Use multiplication and division
within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays,
and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol
for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Objectives:
Students will be able to use models to solve division problems involving repeated
subtraction, record solutions using division number sentences.
Materials:
Smart board
Worksheet
Mini whiteboards
Procedure:
I will start off by tell the class,
You know that you can think of division as sharing equally. You can also think
of division as the opposite of multiplication. Today in math, we will be learning
how to think of division as repeated subtraction.
We as a class will review how multiplication can be thought of as repeated addition. I
will relate this to how subtraction is like repeated subtraction.
Remember how we counted forward with the multiplication repeated addition
bumps? Now we can apply this to division! You will count backwards to zero to
preform repeated subtraction!
I will then model equations on the smart board and preform the math problems together
as a whole class. The students will then practice in their math partnerships on their mini
whiteboards spread throughout the room so every group has their open space to work
together. After, the students will work independently on an equation worksheet at their
desks.

Assessment:
Assessments will be made through the lesson by observing the students during the
group discussion on the carpet about their understanding of repeated subtraction
as well as when they are working in their math partnerships. Formative
assessments will be made throughout the lesson while I will be monitoring the
students independent thinking about the division problems. Students will be
assessed on whether or not they can successfully repeat subtraction when
dividing, and whether or not they can successfully solve the
problem. Assessments of the completed worksheets will be based on the same
standards.
