3rd grade: Measurement: height

Standards:
3.MD.B.4 Measurement and Data. Generate measurement data by measuring
lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by
making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate unitswhole numbers, halves, or quarters.

Objectives:
Students will be able to use the collect and display their data using the correct
measurement tools when measuring height.
Materials:
Toilet paper
Rulers
Worksheet
Pencil
Procedure:
I will start by gathering the student to the carpet,
You know when measuring, there are different ways to do so. What are some
different ways of measuring someones height? Today in math, we will be
estimating and measuring how tall we are.
We as a class will review when it is ideal to use a 12-inch ruler and when to use a
yardstick.
Remember how we learned when measuring something you need to use your
prior skills when deciphering to use a 12-inch ruler or a yardstick? Now we can
use these skills for our activity today! You are going to gather in your groups and
start measuring our friends with the toilet paper!
I will then model how the students will estimate how tall they are using the toilet paper.
The students will then measure how big one of the toilet paper squares and multiple it by
the amount of squares. After, the students will continue to then measure their heights and
comparing the toilet paper heights with their actual height.

Assessment:
Assessments will be made through the lesson by observing the students during the
activity while they are working in their groups. Formative assessments will be
made throughout the lesson while I will be monitoring the students work as they
continue to work. The students will be assessed on their measuring skills,
whether or not the students can properly use a ruler/yard stick
correctly. Assessments of the completed worksheets will be based on the same
standards.
