Ms. Careys Fifth Grade Class

Introduction

Congratulations! You have just bought

your very own apartment. It is
completely empty and you need to
purchase furniture to furnish your
apartment. Your job is to look up
different pieces of furniture, kitchen
supplies, electronics, etc. that you
would like to put in your
apartment. However, you need to
make sure that everything you

Task

Your task for this assignment is to "furnish" an

empty apartment on a budget. Each student
has a budget of $5,000 to buy everything they
need for an apartment. You can include
decorations or furnishings as long as you
remain within your budget. You MUST
purchase a bed, mattress, two couches, a
dining room table and chairs, and a
lamp. Anything else is up to you as the
decorator! Think about what you would like
your first apartment to look like.

Process

Your first step is to research a few furniture and electronic

websites.
Keep track of how much furniture costs at different stores so
you can compare the prices to find the best deal!
You will be adding the cost of each piece of furniture you
purchase. Your calculations must be to the exact cent!
Make sure that your purchases do not exceed your budget
of $5,000.
Create a PowerPoint presentation with the furniture you have
chosen for your apartment.
Each slide in your PowerPoint must have a picture of the
object and the price underneath it. You must also keep a total
amount of money you have spent somewhere on the page.
This will increase with every slide as you add the cost of the
new furniture.
For extra credit, you may create a collage or drawing of what
this apartment could look like with the furniture you selected!

Conclusion
At the end of the assignment, Id like you
to reflect on your task. Were you
surprised how expensive furniture can
be? Do you think $5,000 is enough to
furnish an apartment? I hope you gained
some insight into house and apartment
ownership and keeping track of money.
It is important to set a budget before you
begin shopping, so you dont get carried
away and spend too much. I also
hope you were able to save money by
finding furniture on sale.
