Operating Requirements
• Location: where is your business located (geographically, but also the type of building/structure).
Describe the exterior and interior of your space
• Employees: How many employees will you have? Who will be responsible for which job? What
training or experience is required? How much will each employee be paid?
• Expenses: What office supplies and other regular monthly expenses will you have, and who are
your suppliers

Our business is located in the plaza south-west of Highway 2 and Clarington Boulevard in Bowmanville. It is part of the
strip mall near the Loblaws and Bulk Barn. Parking is available out front in a large parking lot. At this location, we have
close access to the highway, making catering and delivery easier. Inside our store, we will have a small desk for pickup
at the front door, which is located to the right side of the building. Behind this is the kitchen, which is about half of our
entire space. The kitchen contains commercial appliances and large amounts of storage. It has two large islands in the
centre of the room, set up as workstations so two projects could be completed on at once. On the left side of the interior
is where our office space will be located. At the front of the office side is an enclosed office for the owner, or whoever is
completing finances, ordering product, and needing a separate space without interruption. The rest of the non-kitchen
space contains a large table for both conferencing and breaks for staff. This area for staff also has a large whiteboard
with a projector so we can plan events and make sure everyone understands exactly what customers are looking for so
we can work together. This space contains its own small kitchen type area for workers to use as well. The break area
also is where the back door will be located, for the entry of employees. Here, there are lockers and a washroom
accessible to staff.

I would be hiring around three employees. In addition to myself, two employees will be responsible for baking and
decorating cupcakes, helping with deliveries and catering events. A third employee would help me in taking orders,
answering phone calls and emails, filing paperwork and ordering supplies. A fourth employee could be hired later on to
help with deliveries if necessary, depending on the order intake and how much our client base grows. In the future,
working with co-op students or partnering with schools would also be positive and beneficial. My employees would need
to have some background in the field. While some on-site training would be put in place, I would have to know that my
two bakers are qualified and that they knew how to bake and decorate cakes. As for the other employee, some
background would also be helpful. If they had experience with finance and other tasks similar to those of which they
would be fulfilling at Cupcake Co, it would be greatly sought after. My employees would be paid over minimum wage,
since they have past experience and would be working hard. I also believe treating employees fairly is very beneficial
when it comes to an end quality of their work, and the relationships built in the business. This being said, I would set
wages at my business to be $20/hr. Because of our specific business needs, the wages are somewhat higher prices
than what other bakeries might offer. Although earnings may be higher, I would only have a few employees, and the
standards would be set quite high, as to keep our promise of quality to customers. I believe with all this taken into
consideration, $20 is a good price point to start wages at.

The expenses for Cupcake Co. would include rent, utilities, phone, internet, advertising, insurance, office supplies,
cleaning supplies, ingredients, kitchen supplies, supplies for sustaining health code, packaging, and fuel. The cost of
rent would be $2,500/month. The phone service would be provided from Bell for a cost of 34.91/month. The internet
service would also be purchased from Bell at a cost of 94.95/month. Monthly office supplies would be acquired from
Staples, at a budget of $150. Cleaning supplies would come from a variety of stores and have a $300 budget monthly.
An $800 estimate would be set for purchasing monthly ingredients from a variety of wholesale stores. $150 would be
budgeted for kitchen supplies places monthly, if required, and would be purchased from different stores. For supplies to
sustain health code, a budget of $200 will be put in place, also bought from various places. A budget for packaging and
other products supplies will be a monthly expense of $300, purchased from various suppliers.
