Matrix Extracellular

Most animal cells in tissues are embedded in an extracellular matrix that fills
the spaces between cells and binds cells and tissues together

Types of extracellular matrices consist of a variety of secreted proteins and

polysaccarides

Matrix structural proteins

Extracellular matrices are composed of tough fibrous proteins embedded in a

gel-like polysaccharides grouns substances a design basically similar to that
of plant cell walls

In addition to fibrous structural proteins that link components of the matrix

both to one another and attached cells.

The major structural protein of the extracellular matrix is collagen, which is

the single most abundant protein in animal tissues

Matrix polysaccharides

Extracellular matrix are embedded in gels formed from polysaccharides called

glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) which consist of repeating units of disaccharides.

One sugar of the disaccharides is either N-acetylglucosamine or Nacetylgalactosamine and the second is usually acidic (glucuronic acid or
iduronic acid)

Major types of GAGs :

Hyaluronan, dermatan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, keratin sulfate, heparin sulfate

All of GAGs are linked to proteins to from proteoglycans

Matrix adhesion proteins

The final class of extracellular matrix constituents, are responsible for linking
the components of the matrix to one another and the surface of cells.

Interact with collagen and proteoglycans to specify matrix organization and

are the major binding sites for integrins

The prototype of these molecules is fibronectin.
