APA (American Psychological Association)


is a style that is commonly used within the
social science classes. Essay is typed,
double-spaced on basic standard paper,
with 12 pt. Times New Roman font. APA
format usually includes a page header, also
known as the running head. The APA
essay needs to include four major sections:

Similarities:

APA Formatted Paper

Papers are double spaced


all infromation has to included a
citation/reference page
- both use parenthetical citations
- citations are listed alphabeticallly
- Quotes are integrated smoothly and
with transitions.
Differences:

MLA
- Humanities
- cited page at the end
- cited information is last name
then first
- quotes that are 4 lines or
longer are indented
APA
- Social Sciences
- references at end of work
- works cited is last name first
initial
- Quotes 40 words or more are
indented.

Students in Humanities much rather prefer MLA Formatting compared to APA, whereas Social
Science prefers APA over MLA. In college, it varys on which form the teacher prefers. It is
usually based on the teachers understanding of the format. Most teachers in K-12 prefer MLA
because it provides more detail with citing books, anthologies and other sources of the like. With
APA, students will encounter more advanced searches, like technical reports and meetings.

MLA (Modern Language Association) is


commonly used to write papers and cite
sources with liberal arts and humantieis
classrooms. MLA has certain guidelines for
formatting manuscripts and uses the
English language in writing. This format
provides writers with a system for
referencing
and
citing
sources
in
parenthetical style and on a separate
Citation page. General guidelines include:

double-space, Times New Roman
one space after periods or other
marks
margins 1 on all sides
indent first line of all paragraphs
headers and page numbers
italics for titles
