Shrinking Woman
This poetry slam was about not eating. I think I liked it because it talked
about how the men in her family would get bigger as the women would get smaller.
Im kind of confused about it though. She wasnt very loud but I think that was done
to put emphasis on how she is small. Maybe if at one point she wouldve gotten
louder and louder as she talked about growing. She was very hard hitting during the
whole slam. I liked how she said genetics were accidental. I liked how she talked
about her mother and how she picked up her habits, although she didnt mean to.
21

This was a guy talking about the different ages he was at and what was
happening at that age. He starts at 21 and says that his father lied dead in the street
and he never cried. Ive never had a parent or family member struggle with alcohol
abuse however this slam made me think about how different it would be if it
wouldve. I have a friend whose parent is an alcoholic. I went to school with him and
he was my best friend in Elementary and part of Middle school. He then moved to
Georgia and got caught up in drinking. Now he lives with his girlfriend in Atlanta,
works at a car wash and is a part time personal trainer. He is only 19 and I would
consider him an alcoholic. That couldve been me.
Rape Poem to End all Rape
This really was a slam poem. It was interesting to me how they started it.
They started by saying Oh no not another damn rape poem. This definitely caught
my attention and pulled me into it more than I was. After I heard this, it rung in my
head for a while. It addresses the excuses that people make to rape someone. I am
completely against rape, and this was the most influential rape slam poem that I
have ever heard. The delivery was the most important part of the entire poem. I
think that the language used was appropriate. It was used to catch peoples
attention and worked.
