Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard Seven: Opportunities to observe and practice in at least two of the three
early childhood age groups (birth-age 3, 3-5, and/or age 5-8. B. Opportunities to observe and
practice in at least two of the three main types of early education settings (early school grades,
child care centers and homes, and/or Head Start programs.

Brief Description of Evidence: In the fall semester of 2014 during my ECED 100 class, I
did field experience at Apple Tree Daycare as well as Sutton Elementary. I did about 8 hours at
Apple Tree and 42 hours at Sutton Elementary, giving me experience in 2 age ranges as well as 2
different settings.

Analysis of What I Learned: During this experience I got to see different teaching
methods, such as a Reggio Amelia approach in the 3-5 classroom. I didnt notice any specific
approach in my 3rd grade classroom, there were lots of books, and she just got in what lessons
she could when she could. This experience definitely let me know that I hope to work with 3-5
year olds as opposed to the older children.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This artifact demonstrates my competence, because I now understand the way in which the
different age groups function together, and individually as well as teaching strategies that are
better directed towards the specific age group.
