Is a 1000 WOG valve stronger than an ASME B16.34 class 150 valve?

The answer in all probability is NO. Many valve manufacturers sell economy
pattern ball valves in the WOG rating system and then give an option for
flanged ends. When threaded, butt weld or socket weld ends are fitted the
ball valve can be rated to 1000, 2000 or 3000 WOG, but as soon as a flange
is added the same valve is sold as an ASME B16.34 class rated valve.its
maximum pressure rating drops.
An example of this is a 1000 WOG body with class 150 flanged ends, which
effectively de-rates the working pressure of the valve to 285 psi with a nonshock hydro-static pressure of 450 psi.but the valve body had been rated as
1000 psi (1000 WOG).
Invariably what happens is that the valve body thickness is sized per
manufacturer standards for 1000 psi using an allowable stress (often from the
ASME boiler code) and a safety factor (2x seems to be the average) and then
cross referencing ASME B16.34 to give a maximum class rating or sometimes
vice-versa.
If we consider a 4 carbon steel ball valve having an ID of 5.95 (this is the
body ID) and assume class 150; we find a body thickness of 0.28 is required.
Now we can find the basic safety factor used from the allowable stress figure
(20 ksi for carbon steel WCB) by approximation using Barlows formula in
this case the actual stress is ~5200 psi @ 450 psig, thus a safety factor of
approx. 4 has been used from the ASME boiler code allowable stress. But the
same valve is rated for 1000 WOG, so using the same process and thickness
we find that the the actual stress is ~11500 psi A safety factor of only 2 has
been used.
The above methodology basically demonstrates the difference between
economy pattern (WOG) and high specification (ASME B16.34) ball valves
the wall thickness is often much thinner by design for economy patterns when
compared with their counterparts at the same pressure rating. For example a
1000 psi rated valve would need to be a class 600 under ASME B16.34 and
not 1000 WOG, thereby having a much greater wall thickness and much
higher safety.
