Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy Information Sheet


BEFORE SURGERY:
Provide a list of all allergies and medications prior to surgery. Avoid dark beverages.
AFTER SURGERY:
Children under 10 may feel mild pain for 4-7 days following surgery. Ages 10 or older may feel pain for up to 2 weeks.
You will be prescribed Synthetic Codeine (unless allergic). It is recommended that patients not attend work or school for 1 week
during recovery. Adults may feel soreness in the throat for up to 1 month following surgery. Follow the directions for your
medication including dosage and warnings. As soreness decreases, decrease the amount of medication taken per day. Eating and
drinking will be difficult for several days.
THINGS TO AVOID:

beverage products that coat the throat (Ex. Milk)

hard food for several days.

singing or talking. This may cause a dislodging of the scabs in your throat that prevent your throat from bleeding.

strenuous physical activity (running, jogging, working out) if it gets you out of breath try to avoid it.

MEDICATION FACTS:

Take two tablespoons of medicine per day (do not exceed two tablespoons).

Take following a meal.

WARNINGS:
Follow all medication warnings. Do not operate cars or machinery until you know how your medications affect you.
DO NOT combine Tylenol while taking Synthetic Codeine. Keep out of reach of children.
RISKS:

Excessive bleeding (Contact your doctor immediately).

Nasal Regurgitation while eating or drinking.
