lightbulb!)atatime.Tochooseanewwaytolightourschool,weshouldlookat
environmentalimpact,howwellthebulbsactuallywork,andfinallymakesurethecostmakes
sense.Carefulanalysisclearlyshowsthatourclassshouldasktheprincipaltoswitchto
compactfluorescentlamps(CFLs)becausetheywilllighttheschoolbrightly,uselessenergy,
andistheirhighcostwillbeoffsetbyhowmuchmoneywewillhavetospendonelectricity.
WeshouldntjustswitchtoCFLsbecauseotherschoolsaredoingititisclearlytheright
thingtodofortheplanet.
Somescientistssayweshouldchangelightbulbstohelptheenvironment.More
efficientlightbulbsuselesselectricity.Electricityisusuallygeneratedbyburningfossilfuels,

alleviatepoverty.Microfinanceisabusinessapproachtohelpingthepoorbuildtheirwayoutofpoverty,by
providingthepooraccesstofinancialservices,namelycreditandasafeplacefortheirsavings.Microcredit,
theextensionofverysmallloans(microloans)topoorandlowincomeentrepreneurswhocannotaccess

forenablingthepoortorisefrompoverty.
Withcapitaltogrowtheirbusinessesandincreaseearnings,thepoorcaninvestintheirfamilieshealthand

estimates,lessthan20%ofthedemandformicrocreditfromtheworldspoorentrepreneursisbeingmet,a
largeopportunityforsocialinvestorslikeDeutscheBanktomakearealimpactbydevelopingfunding
structurestochannelcapitaltothesecommunities.
