Nonverbal Influence
Presentations

Readings: N/A
Student Objectives: Have an understanding of the Research Study assignment.
Activities: Student give presentations on their nonverbal influence assignments. Present
students with handout and rubric on Nonverbal Research Study assignment; field questions
about specific expectations and requirements of the assignment. Students will briefly present
their Nonverbal Influence Paper. Collect the weeks assignment: Nonverbal Influence Paper &
Assessment 5.
Audio/Visual: Powerpoint with presentations
Week 11

Thursday March 19

Functions: Self-Expression

Readings: Burgoon, Guerrero & Floyd Chapter 11; Manusov & Patterson Chapters 16
& 26
Student Objectives: Diagram the components of facial expression.
Activities: Lecture on the functions of facial expressions. Discussion on the behavioral
ecology view of expression. Students will be asked to examine the emotions and motives
latent to facial expression. Collect the weeks assignment: Assessment 6
Audio/Visual: Powerpoint with lecture (with illustrations of concepts and brief video
examples)
Week 12

Functions: Impressions

Readings: Burgoon, Guerrero & Floyd Chapters 9 & 14; Manusov & Patterson Chapters
17 & 19
Student Objectives: Criticize how the absence of direct interaction still has the functional
ability to provide nonverbal impressions.
Activities: Lecture on the various functional approaches to impression management.
Students will be provided with case studies of individuals (using the Human of New York
blog) and will be tasked with applying impression management techniques to each
example. Collect the weeks assignment: Research Study Outline (with Supporting
Materials) & Assessment 7.
Audio/Visual: Powerpoint with lecture and discussion (with illustrations of concepts and
brief video examples)
