Lab Safety Practice
Purpose
Today you will be working in groups of four in order to practice lab safety
that was discussed earlier this week. You and your group will be working with
chemicals, which need to be handled carefully. While practicing lab safety, you
will record your observations of the materials, predictions of the reaction, and
observations of the completed reaction.
Background
All the chemicals today are common household items that are used on a
daily basis except for Hydrogen Peroxide 6%. Normally one can buy Hydrogen
Peroxide 2% at a grocery store and use it for teeth whitening, first aid, and
cleaning. But the Hydrogen Peroxide we are using today is 6%, and this is used
for bleaching hair. It is a skin and eye irritant, so using gloves and goggles is
extremely important in this lab.
Materials:
1 packet of yeast
120 mL of hydrogen peroxide 6%
15 mL of dish soap
45 mL of warm water
1 200 mL Erlenmeyer flask
1 200 mL beaker
Food coloring
Prelab

Procedure
1) Pour 120 mL of the hydrogen peroxide into the Erlenmeyer flask then add
8 drops of the food coloring of your groups choice.
2) Add 15 mL of dish soap to the Erlenmeyer flask and mix the mixture
together
3) In the beaker pour the warm water and mix the packet yeast together for
30 seconds.
4) Before mixing the chemicals, answer questions 1 and 2.
5) Pour the water mixture into the Erlenmeyer flask.
