Body Senses and Critical Thinking
Objectives:
1. Utilize body senses in the application of critical thinking skills;
2. Explore key concepts in critical thinking such as inductive and deductive
reasoning and;
3. Appreciate the importance of body senses in developing of critical
thinking.

PRETEST

True or False
DIRECTIONS: Read each statement below. Write T if the statement is TRUE and
if your answer is FALSE, write F.
Question Answer

1. There are 5 senses that the body can use.

2. Critical thinking under develop skills needed in imposing intellectual

standards upon a person.

3. A well-critical thinker communicates solutions effectively to

others to a complex problem.

4. Deductive reasoning begins with specific facts to the general idea.

5. Inductive reasoning begins with a general idea to specific facts.

1
KEY CONCEPTS:
• Critical thinking is the mode of thinking - about any subject, content, or
problem - in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking
by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and
imposing intellectual standards upon them.
• Proper utilization of body senses greatly helps in citing an explanation
and creating a critical thinking skill.
• Inductive reasoning is a type of reasoning that moves from specific facts
to a broad conclusion or generalization.
• Deductive reasoning always begins with
INTRODUCTION a general idea, then moves forward with

specific facts to reach a specific

conclusion.

The five senses - sight, taste, touch,

hearing, and smell – collect information
about our environment that are interpreted
by the brain. We make sense of this
information based on previous experience
(and subsequent learning) and by the
combination of the information from each
of the senses.
We respond almost automatically to most
sensory information. Such a response is
important for survival in our environment.

General Ideas

• We use our senses to gather and Image 1.1: The Five Senses
respond to information about our https://images.app.goo.gl/kp57KNxyiyfwRf5x7
environment, which aids our survival.
• Each sense provides different information which is combined and
interpreted by our brain.
• We can use senses in collecting evidence and data for scientific analysis.

The following activities below will exercise our senses in creating critical
thinking in a scientific way. These should trigger our thinking skills
physically, mentally, and emotionally

ACTIVITY #1

Get it?!
When we were kids, we loved answering riddles, did’nt we? Your task in this
activity is to asnwer the riddles and the succeeding questions. Enjoy!

1. I hear the pop, pop, pop! I smell something buttery. I see something white.
I feel something soft. I taste something salty. What could I be?

2. I smell fruity. I feel rough and wet. I look like a bumpy ball. I taste sweet
and juicy. What am I? __________________
3. You cut me up, you chop me up, you dice me up and you cry over me.

4. I get chewed but should not be swallowed or eaten and always get thrown
away. What I could be? ___________________
5. Give me food, and I will live. Give me water, and I will die. What am I?

sensations/feelings to someone who had never seen or experienced them
before? Use and maximize all your senses in your description.

Critical thinking is a mode of thinking - about any subject, content, or problem - in
which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking
charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual
standards upon them.

A well-cultivated critical thinker:

• Raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and
precisely.
• Gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to
interpret it effectively comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions,
testing them against relevant criteria and standards.
• Thinks open mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing
and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical
consequences; and
• Communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex
problems.

Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-

corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and
mindful command of their use.

Inductive vs Deductive reasoning

Deduction and induction are often referred to as a type of inference, which

basically just means reaching a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning.

Figure 1.2: Deductive and Inductive Reasoning

The biggest difference between deductive and inductive reasoning is that inductive
reasoning is a type of reasoning that moves from specific facts to a broad
conclusion or generalization. While deductive reasoning always begins with a
general idea, then moves forward with specific facts to reach a specific conclusion.

Example:
• “Nora must have 15 credits to graduate High School. But she only has 9
credits, therefore she will not be graduating High school this year.” - is an

example of Deductive Reasoning. The statement starts from General ideas to
Specific facts.
• “Lisa sold 45 lemonades today. Jisoo sold 33 lemonades and 3 colas. While
Rose sold 20 lemonade and 20 colas for today. Therefore, Lisa sold the most
drinks for today.” - is an example of Inductive Reasoning. The statement goes
from Specific ideas to General statements.

ACTIVITY #4

Read and Respond

Directions: Read each statement; Follow the instruction for each statement.

1. Underline the specific facts. Encircle the conclusion.

2. Underline the general idea. Double underline the specific situation. Encircle
the specific conclusion.

3. Explain why the conclusion is incorrect.
