INTRODUCTION:

Bouncy Eggs experiment introduces students to the chemical properties of eggs and shows them how a
chemical reaction between the acetic acid in vinegar and the calcium carbonate of the egg shell results in a
rubbery egg. The once brittle egg shell is now replaced by a rubber coating, yet the raw inside of the egg remains.
The egg can “glow” at this point when held up to a light because there is no longer an opaque shell.

DIRECTIONS: Obtain the procedure of the activity from your teacher. Read and understand carefully the steps
before performing the simple science experiment or activity. After which, make a data logbook with completed
details and present to the class.
1. Since each group has 3 eggs, two groups join together.
2. Make 2 varying concentrations of vinegar. (Mix vinegar with water. 100% and 75% concentrations)
3. Get your plastic containers. Put your egg into it with varying vinegar concentrations.
4. Pour vinegar into the glass until the egg is covered.
5. Put the glass aside so no one drinks and/or spills it.
6. Let the egg soak overnight.
7. Rinse the vinegar and foam out with water and then cover the egg again with vinegar.
8. Wait for three days.
9. Describe the appearance of the egg and measure its mass.
10. Compare your results to the egg not being submerged.
11. Record all your findings.

PRE-LAB QUESTIONS:
1. What is the shell of an egg made of? Can you think of anything else that is also made of this
chemical? Think “shell.”
