Year 7 Chemistry CAT

Temperature and Solubility

Learning Intention:
 Students will determine if temperature can influence the ability of a solute to dissolve.
 Students will demonstrate their ability to present their work in a formal practical report.
 Students will apply specific skills and rules relating to the safe use of scientific
equipment.

You will be required to complete and submit a formal report on this practical activity. It can be completed on
paper or electronically.
Preparation: (to be completed on this page)

AIM: To determine if increasing the temperature of water will affect the amount of ALUM that will
dissolve

1. State the Independent Variable (what it is you are deliberately changing).

State the Dependent Variable (what it is that you change as a result)

2. Use your IV and DV to write your HYPOTHESIS.

3. Suggest the variables you need to control in your experiment to prevent them changing your
results.

4. Write a step by step METHOD of your experiment. Keep in mind your IV, DV, controlled
variables and aim. Draw and label a scientific diagram to show how you will set the equipment
up. Make sure it is:
 Clear, accurate, detailed (Another person should be able to repeat exactly what you did
using your instructions)
 Written in third person and past tense (Write about the equipment not the people eg.
Don’t use ‘me’ ‘I’ ‘we’ ‘she’ ‘he’ etc).

you reduce the safety risk?

7. Conduct you experiment and record your RESULTS in in the space below. Think about how
you are going to display this data. (You should include TWO ways to represent your data!)

8. Use your results to create a line graph of the total spoons added at each temperature. Make
sure you give your graph a title and label the axis.
9. For this investigation, you will need to answer the following questions in full and complete
sentences:
a. In this activity a solution was made. Name the solute and the solvent.

b. State the terms which are used to describe

ii. A weak solution.

iii. A solution which no more solute will dissolve.

10.For your conclusion, you will need to write a response to the aim, using some data
(information) from your experiment. Do your results help to support or reject your hypothesis.
