HISTORY
With the emergence of Pakistan on the world's map, a Posts and Telegraph department was
established in 1947. A major step was taken in 1962 when Pakistan Telephone and Telegraph
department was established, since then PTCL is playing a major role in the field of
telecommunication.
Being a government organization it came across the social criticism but according to Pakistan
Telecommunication Corporation Act 1991, Pakistan Telephone and Telegraph Department was
handed over to Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation (PTC). The PTC's main objective was
to bring a positive change in the MANAGEMENT by inviting Private Sector and also issuing
licenses for cellular, Card operated pay phones, Paging and Data communication services.
Later in 1991, Government decided to privatize PTCL. In 1994, six million vouchers of PTCL
were issued by the Government and then the vouchers were converted in PTCL shares in
mid_1996. In October 1996, Pakistan telecommunication (Reorganization) Act was passed by
the government which made PTCL the sole telecommunication organization in Pakistan.
The new millennium brought the mobile phone craze throughout the world. so in 2001 PTCL
joined the race and launched the mobile service by the name of Ufone. Data services subsidiaries
were also established under the name Paknet. It succeeded but with the passage of time it
dissolved.
Another major success of PTCL after Paknet is DSL services which are directly supervised by
PTCL and offers unlimited services.
The V-fone service introduced by PTCL is also a major success with 0.8 million customers and
