~ Capstone Project Proposal ~

for Engineering Design & Development
-Put BriefLYMy project will be composed of two parts; an internship and a model recreational
gathering place / downtown area. Throughout the year, I will be meeting with Clyde Melick, the
city planner of Waxahachie - to learn about what a city planner does and involve myself in
Waxahachies current development. In addition to this, I will be designing my own recreational
downtown area from scratch and modeling it in Revit. Taking into account infrastructural system
and populous flow, I hope to create a realistic and holistic model.
I want to take on this project in order to learn more about urban planning as a career and a field
of study. My current plan is to study Urban Design in college, but my experience in the field thus
far has been limited to a Civil Engineering and Architecture class my sophomore year and my
own personal studies. This project will help me better understand what it is Im working towards
and let me flex my own creative muscles in that space before truly delving into it in college.

-MILESTONESFirst - Contact Clyde Melick to set up meeting times for internship

(November)

Second - Attend internship times and learn about the job

(January through May)

Third - Research successful downtown areas from all around the world
(Throughout October and Novmeber)

Fourth - Specifically analyze Waxahachies downtown with Clydes assistance

(January)

Fifth - Determine necessary businesses for a successful downtown

(December)

Sixth - Design my downtown area on paper

(Throughout December and January)

Seventh - Get Clyde and Mrs. Moons feedback on my downtown design

(January 5-9th)

Eighth - Design my downtown in Revit

(January through April)

Ninth - Create an explanatory presentation about my project as a whole

(April)

Tenth - Receive letter of recommendation from Clyde

(End of May)

-ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONMy final product will be a Revit model and paper plans for an entire recreational gathering
space as well as a project explaining the various aspect of said model.

My professional mentors will include the city planner of Waxahachie, TX, Clyde Melick
and civil engineering teacher, April Moon.

I will be attending my internship twice a week and will be working on my downtown model
throughout the Spring semester from 2-5.

My audience includes anyone interested in urban planning and design as well as the people
in charge of the current development in Waxahachies downtown and global students interested
in attending an after school event.

My success will be measured by the number of people that come to my presentation at the
end of the year and if I actually accomplish everything I have planned to do., how well Clyde
thinks it would actually function, and the visual quality of my Revit model.

-PAPER TOPICS**in order of my current personal preference

One - The benefits of recreational downtown areas and gathering spaces in a community
or
Two - Why Waxahachie has been designed the way it has
or

Three - Possible gentrification in Waxahachie as its downtown develops
