Idioms (also called idiomatic expression) are expressions, words, or phrases that have a

metaphorical, figurative meaning conventionally understood by native speakers. This meaning


is different from the literal meaning of the idiom's individual elements. In other words, idioms
don't mean exactly what the words say. They have, however, a hidden meaning. People use
them to express something more vividly and often more briefly.

Examples:

as gentle as a lamb
kind , innocent, mild-mannered people.

to be a pain in the neck


to be annoying

Something very important, difficult, or of concern
