Van Dammage:
The Jean-Claude Van Damme Movie Marathon

Were celebrating Japans greatest gift to the comedy world with

a series featuring his hilarious Japanese comedies leading up to
the release of R100 by Drafthouse Films.

4 movies. 1 man. All muscle.

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable day of round-house kicks
and globe-spanning action! One fateful day in the mid 1980s,
Jean Claude Van Damme, working as a waiter in Los Angeles,
did a high kick over Cannon Films producer Menahem Golans
head all while holding a tray of soup steady. The move directly
won him the lead role in BLOODSPORT, and there was born
an action star like no other.

BIG MAN JAPAN (2007, 35mm)

Decidedly odd, even by Japanese standards, this mockumentary
about an electrically charged, skyscraper-high superhero saddled
with misfortune, bad press and even worse TV ratings is tearsdown-the-face funny and a genuine, jaw-dropping oddity.
SYMBOL (2009, 35mm)

Join us for a day of four JCVD movies all on 35mm - snakes

will be punched, blood and sweat will fly, splits will be done in
the most unusual places and there will of course be plenty of
flexed butt shots for the ladies. The line-up is a secret, but that
is part of the fun. There will be food specials, trailers and other
surprises in store but most importantly there will be movies
with the Van Damme physical prowess on full display.

Smart, impeccably crafted and, most importantly, very funny

A film that plays like a candy coated, Japanese game show version of a Franz Kafka short story, SYMBOL is wildly resistant
to review and discussion without veering into major spoiler
territory but is far too striking to not make the attempt.
SCABBARD SAMURAI (2011)

Special thanks to Academy Film Archives for the loan of one

super-secret print.

Director Hitoshi Matsumoto continues to impress me with his

sheer mastery of film as a medium, whether he is using it to
show a gross-out joke, his vision of life or to simply pull your
heartstrings. That he manages to do all three and make it seem
effortless is a marvel, and SCABBARD SAMURAI is a good
example of what makes him great.
R100 (2015)
If a dominatrix is one who takes total control of her passive
partner, then R100 is the cinematic equivalent of a kinky
femme fatale in black leather and stiletto heels, cracking a whip
and a smile.

Fangoria Presents:
THE COMPANY OF WOLVES (1984, 35mm)
On only his second feature as director, director Neil Jordan
weaves an eerily gorgeous fairy tale exploring the deep, dark
psychosexual undertones of the Little Red Riding Hood myth.
The films Little Red stand-in is young Rosaleen, who is told
tales of wolves in the woods and the beast within men by her
grandmother, and faces temptation when she encounters a
mysterious huntsman during a walk to Grannys house.
Cinema Cocktails: MY MAN GODFREY (1936)
If you had to find one film that perfectly expressed the hilarious
and magical, yet socially-conscious escapism that Hollywood
mastered during the Great Depression, MY MAN GODFREY
is the one. Its the definitive screwball comedy, following the
story of a wealthy family of high social standing who hire a
down and out hobo to be their butler and valet.. Madcap antics,
biting social satire and glamorous romance mix to produce a
movie thats unstoppable force of pure happiness.
Vinegar Syndrome: RAW FORCE (1982)
Time to grab a shotgun and take a double-barrel blast straight
to the forehead, because you CANNOT TAKE the epochal
omegawave that is, was, and always will be RAW FORCE!!!
Blue-skinned undead samurai? Cannibalistic rump-chasing
monks? Drunken kung-fu yacht party? Wall-eyed flesh-trading
seaplane pilot with a Hitler moustache? In absolute honesty, all
this is just the tip of the trashberg!
Big Screen Classics:
REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955)
Deans pop culture impact has lived on for decades beyond his
life and will continue to do so, with his iconic image as an immediate signifier of Americana cool. The pompadour. The red
jacket. The car. The ice cold piercing baby blues. Its red, white
and blue with colors that never run. Deans style has been one
emulated by clothing designers and advertisers alike for decades
because it says everything it needs to say about a person or a
product without saying anything.
Staff Picks: SPACE JAM (1996)
The evil Swackhammer, owner of the amusement park planet
Moron Mountain, is desperate for a new attraction, so he
sends his henchmen, the Nerdlucks, to Looney Tune Land for
some forcible recruitment. Bugs and the crew hatch a plan to
challenge the diminutive Nerdlucks to a game of basketball The
Tunes think they have it in the bag until the Nerdlucks use their
strange powers to transform themselves into the ultra-muscular ,
insanely tall, mega-basketball playing ultra team, The Monstars.
So its up to our carrot chomping leader to recruit the only man
than can save Tune-kind: Michael Jordan.

Monday Night Thread Up:

STONE COLD (1991, 35mm)
On suspension for excessive violence, Brian The Boz Bosworth stars as John Stone/Joe Huff, a tough Alabama cop who
is fed up with how the justice system handles criminals with kid
gloves. When some twisted cops black mail him into going undercover to bust an underground white supremacist biker drug
ring ran by LANCE FUCKING HENRIKSEN, all bets are
off and its up to the Boz to get to the bottom of their sinister
plot to assasinate a government official. Wham-bam fisticuffs,
insane one-liners and exploding fucking helicopters soon follow
in what could be argued to be the greatest, most important
achievement of The Bozs career. If you miss this, you will die.
AGFA Presents: SUPER FUZZ (1980, 35mm)
Outrageously stupid dubbed Italian comedy about policeman
David Speed, played by comedy spaghetti western icon Terence Hill, who stands a little too close to an exploding nuclear
missile. Just as in real life, the exposure to devastating atomic
shockwaves and high levels of radioactive plutonium gives him
super powers. He has telepathy, telekinesis, he can catch bullets
in his teeth, jump through walls, fall from great heights with
no consequences, walk on water, stop time and pretty much do
anything else thats convenient for the plot. But his powers dont
always work, which leads to some wacky complications - and
youre going to LOVE those wacky complications. With Ernest
Borgnine as his by-the-book partner, who just gets all steamed
up when Officer Dave wont follow the rules..
Tough Guy Cinema: THIEF (1981, 35mm)
Franks the best safecracker in town, hes got a tight team and
he gets away clean. Hes been to the joint so he knows whats at
stake and he knows how to minimize risk. Frank has his perfect
vision of his future, being a model citizen as soon as he makes
enough money to get by. But you cant be the best in town and
not draw some attention. Frank gets an offer he cant refuse and
accepts a series of high risk scores for a big-time gangsters in an
attempt to accelerate his dream to reality. Franks about to learn
the real cost of his American Dream. Michael Mann writes and
directs this incredible photographed heist film to the hypnotically perfect sounds of Tangerine Dream. The cast is a whos
who of celebrities and the story is simple and elegant: A man
wants to make enough money to get away clean, but when he
works in the dirtiest business things can get complicated.
Video Vortex: WINTERBEAST (1991)
VHS-only insanity projected from VHS for only one buck!
Shot over six years on three different formats for $10,000
in Massachusetts, this movie is a true no-fi miracle. When
The Wild Goose Lodge is overrun with mutilation-minded,
stop-motion beastoids, its up to Sergeant Whitman and Forest
Ranger Stillman to take care of bizness! But what about the
creepiest lodge proprietor who ever creeped around in a plaid
suit, Mr. Sheldon? And what about Whitmans shape-shifting
mustache?! Collage-like, immersive in its cheapness, and deliriously unhinged, WINTERBEAST is one of the one-hundred
million black holes that exist in the Milky Way galaxy. It is also
the largest.

out and enjoy yourselves, so you can die with a smile on your
face, without feelin like the good Lord gypped you.
Girlie Night:
MEAN GIRLS QUOTE-ALONG (2004)
Given the stellar cast and hilarious script, its easy to see why
this movie so quickly earned a permanent place in our cultural
lexicon, not to mention my every day vocabulary. From the
elegantly simple, Boo, you whore, to Damians trademark,
YOU GO, GLEN COCO! the script is packed with great
lines, which is why weve created the first ever quote-along
version of the movie! As you recite your favorite lines, you can
try to make fetch happen with Gretchen and experience ESPN
with Karen while playing along with props themed to the film.
MONTY PYTHON AND
THE HOLY GRAIL QUOTE-ALONG (1975)
Thats right, one of the greatest and most quotable movies of all
time is getting the Action Pack Quote-Along treatment and you
can be there for all its sword fighting, coconut clomping glory
at the Alamo Drafthouse! As always well have the best lines
subtitled karaoke style for your quoting pleasure as well as some
of the silliest songs you can hope to sing. Well also have swords
for everyone, coconut halves for you to bring your imaginary
horses to life and a test of will, dexterity and might prior to the
show to recruit some brave knights to our cause.
So follow, but follow only if ye be men of valour. For the
entrance to this quote-along is guarded by a creature so foul, so
cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived. Bones of full
fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do
doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death
awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth.
TOTALLY 80S SING ALONG MADONNA PARTY

get in trouble if you stood up and started dancing like a crazy
person right in front of the screen. But at Sing-Along Dance
Parties we transform our auditoriums into the greatest dance
club in your neighborhood, complete with fully VJed sets of the
greatest music videos ever made plus free props included with

to discover the Girls have a winning sense of humor about
themselves, their image and their art. To borrow a line from a
pop princess of the past, these Girls just want to have fun, and
sometimes the good humor they generate is contagious.
