a) Name the process shown above

..
b) Predict the compound P
................................................................................................................................
c) Compound P can react directly with water to form sulphuric acid suggest with
reason why the process is not used during the manufacturing process?
..
d) Suggest the identity of Q and R.
..
e) Write a chemical equation to represent the dissolving of sulphur dioxide in water.
..

ANSWER
a) Contact Process
b) Sulphur Trioxide
c) If this process is carried out, a great
amount of heat will be given out.
Corrosive sulphuric acid vapour will
escape and polute the air
d) Q= amonia, R = amonium sulphate
e) SO2 (g) + H2O (l)
H2SO4 (aq)

Worksheet 2
Nitrogen, in the form of nitrogenous
compounds is important in agriculture.
Explain how one such compound can be
manufactured in industry through Haber
process.

Answer

Haber process :
Pure and dry nitrogen and hydrogen gases are passed over iron
filings as catalyst, mixed with a promorter aluminium oxide, at 450oC
500oC and 200 atmosphere.
Nitrogen is obtained from air through fractional distillation
Hydrogen is obtained from the reaction of charcoal on steam
H 2O + C
CO + H2
Low temperature and high pressure will increases production of
ammonia but slows down the process, thus they are not cost
effective.
Thus and optimum temperature of 450-5000C and a pressure of 200
atm are used
