CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
A plastic is a type of synthetic or man-made polymer; similar in many ways to
natural resins found in trees and other plants.Whether you are aware of it or not,
plastic plays a very important part in our life. Plastics versatility allow them to be
used in everything from the cars parts, to doll parts, plastics from soft drink bottles to
the refrigerators they are stored in. from the car you drive to work, into the television
you watch at home, plastics help make your life easier and better.
Every year, a lot of plastics are dumped into landfills, where they can take
hundreds and even thousands of many years to begin breaking down. In many cases,
these plastic bottles never fully break down because traditional plastic materials that
are inedible to the soil microbes responsible for carrying out decomposition. This is
also one of the reasons why many places in the community are easily getting flooded
whenever typhoon comes. Rain water are trap and cannot pass the canals because
plastic wastes are clogging on it.
Dumping trash into the estero, creeks and other waterways. Especially the
squaters living along the banks of waterways are especially to blame. They simply
throw their garbage out the windows and into the water and think no more of it. This
is part of the garbage that the abused sea throws back at us. Another is, those who
cant manage their own plastic waste, they just threw it somewhere.

2
The use of plastic bags by supermarkets, groceries, stores and Styrofoam by
the fast-food chains are culprit.
With this problem, the researchers came up with the idea to add plastic wastes
in bricks, to lessen the impediment garbage wastes in the community.
Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to find out if the produced bricks are accepted. This study
tried to:
1. Find out the level of acceptability of the brick when exposed to sun for
one week in terms of:
a) Hardness
b) Texture
c) Appearance
2. Find out the level of acceptability of the brick when exposed to sun for
three weeks in terms of:
a) Hardness
b) Texture
c) Appearance

3
Hypothesis

The plastic-bottled bricks are accepted in terms of hardness, texture and

appearance.
Significance of the Study
Its very hard to avoid using plastic even if we want to. They simply used in
almost everything, from foods and beverages to gadgets and even construction
materials. They are actually very useful to us. Its just that they are not exactly
environment-friendly. They are one of the biggest contributions to the growing
garbage problems and environmental concerns worldwide.
Bricks are very important in making buildings or houses. Due to high price of
the commercial bricks, some people can no longer buy bricks for their houses. This
study aim to introduce a new type of bricks made from plastic wastes. Its advantage
is that cheaper than the commercial bricks.
Scope and Limitation
This study focuses on the acceptability of plastic bottle bricks in rides in terms
of hardness, texture and appearance. Aesthetic value is not included in this study. The
bricks was evaluated by our neighbors, respondents from Baranggay 5, Laoag City.
Definition of Terms
Appearance- It is the act of emerging, arrivingor coming into existence.
4

Bottles- This are containers for liquids, usually made of glass or plastic, with a
narrow neck and no handle.
Bricks- It is a bold rectangular block of clay or a similar material that is baked until it
is hard and is used for building houses, walls, and other large permanent structures.
Durabillity- It is the ability to undergo permanent deformation without cracking or
fracturing.
Hardness- It is the state or quality of being firm, solid and compact.
Plastics- This are extremely versatile synthetic material made from the
polymerization of organic compounds.
Texture- It is the feel and appearance of a surface, especially how rough or smooth it
is.
