ABSTRACT

A new product is introduced to everyone for them to apply thin their floor. This new
product is called “POLYETHYLENE WAX” derived from plastic materials into floor wax.

The idea of this study are planned thoroughly so that everyone can afford to used and
made their own floor wax too. The procedures are melting candles, and plastic waste into the
boiling kerosene. This study has a desire to develop recycling for people to use. It also aims to
provide everyone a solution when it comes in cleaning and polishing the floors of their homes
and rooms. Aside from the fact that it also help lessen the increasing number of plastic waste in
our country, it’s cheaper than any other floor wax.
CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Some of the waste are recyclable and others are not. These plastics that people throw off
anywhere as one of the factors that causes our planet to worsen easily, for they are non-
biodegradable waste thereof, they take too much time-perhaps never to decompose. But we’re
wrong how we use them without acknowledging their help, often underestimating their true
values. People abusing this kind of product is shown each time they leave, throw, rather plastics
everywhere.(http://plastic-pollution.org/)

According to International Journal of Darshan Institute on Engineering, the plastics have

many advantages, and have become a part and parcel of routine life of humans. Now the stock of
waste plastic has grown up to very dangerous level and we find that frequently our drainage
systems are blocked. It has come to notice that the living stocks consume the plastics and have
met with fatal incidents because of plastic bags locking up in the digestive systems of animals.
We are cornered to a situation that we cannot say absolute ‘NO’ to plastics because of its utility,
and at the same time in the absence of proper awareness and plastic waste management system
we have to pay even more than the benefits accrued by the plastics. Thus, it is the need of the
hour that we shall think in the direction to integrate the plastics effectively in our life cycle.

According to an article of Northern California Compactors, plastic recycling is the process

of recovering different types of plastic material in order to reprocess them into varied other
products, unlike their original form. An item made out of plastic is recycled into a different
product, which usually cannot be recycled again. (https://www.norcalcompactors.net)
According to article of environment, the same properties that make plastics so useful —
their durability and resistance to degradation — also make them nearly impossible for nature to
completely break down. Most plastic items never fully disappear; they just get smaller and
smaller. Many of these tiny plastic particles are swallowed by farm animals or fish who mistake
them for food, and thus can find their way onto our dinner plates. They’ve also been found in a
majority of the world’s tap water.(environment.org.)

So, conducting a research about recycling those plastics waste materials by using it in
experiment research is necessary. We can convert plastics waste materials into a usable product
such as plastic bottles (mineral water), plastic bags, straw of soft drinks, plastic cups which is
floor wax. The very core of techniques, concerning as to contemplating the best ways of plastic
bottles (mineral water), plastic bags, straw of soft drinks, plastic cups minimizing plastics is
through recycling. On a simple manner, recycling processes that are conducted throughout the
globe aims to create a new product from the items they've collected, which would be many times
more efficient for the growth of the society. Plastic as the largest population of waste and with
the agency to help minimize plastic waste conducting experimental research is essential. The
study will hold the techniques by recycling plastic waste to create a component which would
greatly affect the purpose, achieving an alternative floor wax, which would contain pleasing
characteristics in odor, durability, shine when applied.
STATEMENT OF THE STUDY

This study aims to experiment that plastic waste can be an alternative source of making a
floor wax that has a less odor compare to the other floor wax that we had.

1. Effectiveness of floor wax produced by assessing.

a. The shine of the floor.
b. The odor of the floor wax when it apply to the floor.
c. Hard of the floor wax when it apply to the floor.
2. Product description as to:
a. The color of floor wax.
b. The consistency of floor wax.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The study covers up wide resources that are available in our environment from the
materials use such as plastic waste and kerosene. For the experiment of using plastic bottles
(mineral water), plastic cups, straw of soft drinks, plastic bags, and plastic waste that serves as an
alternative source for floor wax making. As for applications the researcher specifies concrete
floors as primary for testing.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Reduce plastic waste in the environment by using them as components for the desired
products.

 To the household owner, it will help them to make the floor clean and shiny.
 To the people, this experiment study will help those people to easily make this product.
 To the community, it helps reduce plastic waste by producing floor wax.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to the International Journal of Darshan Institute on Engineering Research &

Emerging Technologies, littered plastic pieces clog and disturb the drainage of towns at times
causing water logging in urban area. This spread of plastic waste also reduces the rate and
quantum of rain water percolation, resulting in lowering of already low water levels. Plastic
waste management is the scientific reduction, reuse, recovery, recycling, composting or disposal
of plastic waste. Plastic products are integral part in our daily life as a basic need. Plastic is
produced on a massive scale worldwide and its production crosses the 150 million tons per year
globally. In India approximately, 8 million tons of plastic products are consumed every year
(2008). It is a fact that plastics never degrade and remain on landscape for several years. Mostly,
plastics are recyclable but recycled products are even more hazardous to the environment than
the virgin products. The recycling of a virgin plastic material can be done 2-3 times only,
because after every recycling, the plastic material is deteriorated due to thermal pressure.
Considering, 70% of plastic consumption is converted as waste, approximately 5.6 million tons
per annum plastic waste (Any plastic product such as carry bags, pouches or multilayered
packaging, which have been discarded after use or after their intended life is over) is generated in
our country, which equals to 15342 tons per day. (www.darshan.ac.in)

According to article unenvironment, from the 1950s to the 70s, only a small amount of
plastic was produced, so plastics waste was relatively manageable. By the 1990s, plastic waste
generation had more than tripled in two decades, following a similar rise in plastic production.
Today, we produce about 300 million tons of plastic waste every year. That’s nearly equivalent
to the weight of the entire human population. (unenvironment.org)

Some researchers estimate that more that 8.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced
since the early 1950s. About 60% of that plastic has ended up in either a landfill or the natural
environment. (unenvironment.org)
According to the News Data from the  2018 study "Plastic waste inputs from land into the
ocean" shows that the Philippines wastes 6, 237, 653 kg (6875.84 tons) of plastic per day, of
which 81% is mismanaged. According to the UN report, 300 million tons of plastic waste is
produced every year and "half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once and
thrown away." Single-use plastic products include plastic water bottles made with polyethylene
terephthalate (PET); harder plastic bottles used for shampoo or milk made with high-density
polyethylene (HDPE); grocery bags and food packaging made with low-density polyethylene;
and plastic cutlery made with polystyrene (PS) among others. Although repurposing these
materials have continuously been encouraged, the UN report stated that only 9% of all plastic
waste ever produced has been recycled.

According to clean link of polishes, floor polishes have changed significantly over the
decades, and as they’ve changed, so too has the floor maintenance industry. Natural waxes that
played an integral part of the early floor maintenance polishes have gone by the wayside, and
new polymer emulsion finishes have successfully taken their place. Although there are many
different varieties of floor polishes today, the challenge of floor polishes is still the same; they
must protect the flooring material while being easy to clean, possess an acceptable gloss
appearance that is maintainable and provide a safe surface to walk on. That’s an awful lot to ask
of a thin film of plastic.

The term “wax” has been used for over a century in the floor maintenance industry,
although it is now somewhat of a misnomer. Its roots come from the early days of floor
maintenance with the use of natural waxes in early polishes. Many of the original waxes were
made from the carnuba plant and mixed with a solvent to make a viscous paste wax. According
to an article clean link, much of the terminology and the traditional procedures in floor care
come from the early history of floor finishes.  So it is important to understand their history and
the evolution of modern technology used today.  This technology is a combination of floor finish
evolution and floor machine advances that have increased the speed for buffing resulting in a
higher shine in less time. .  (https://EzineArticles.com)
According to Mickey Crowee, polymers in floor polishers serves as the agent
responsible for the glossy film that marks the floor polish dries. Polymers contains inherent
properties in which it determines the polisher’s shines, hardness, consistency, water
resistance.

Many people still talk about “waxing” the floor, even though it has been 50 years
since natural waxes were widely used as a floor finish.  The first floor finishes were
carnauba waxes, made from the leaves of a tropical plant.  Carnauba is a natural wax
emulsion blend combined with a resin.  Carnauba waxes were buffable and gave a great
shine.  They dried to a slight haze and left deep, rich swirls on the floor when buffed.

Floor waxes or sometimes reffered to as floor polisher compromises a certain type of

emulsion known as polymer emulsions. According to Ezmeralda Lee, polymer emulsions
influence the performance of the wax and provide connections between allother included
ingredients.

Synthetic wax/polymer finishes followed carnauba wax.  In the late 1940s, a
synthetic floor finish using a water-based and a plastic called polystyrene was developed.
The first polystyrene finishes were colorless and had a very high gloss.  But, they were also
very brittle and tended to turn yellow after a period of time.  When the wax-like plastic
polyethylene was mixed with the polystyrene, however, a very durable, buffable, non-brittle
floor finish was created. (www.cleanlink.com)

Research Hypothesis

If, the amount of kerosene is increase, it will not work because the floor wax will be
watery. If too much plastic materials is added then it will not work because it will be too
viscous/thick. The recycled plastic waste as substitute for content in floor wax will not work
because of unequal measurements. Plastics waste is not a good substitute for content in making
floor wax. But if you will do the exact measurements of all ingredients then, The recycled
plastic waste can be a floor wax.
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter will determine materials, treatments characteristics, use of plastics waste,
research design, research procedure, research process.

USE OF PLASTIC WASTE

The plastic waste such a plastic will be collected in the surroundings of Northern
Christian College to reduce the plastic waste. To analyse the productivity of the applied floor
wax, the researcher will compare the experiment product and the commercial product. The data
that will be gathered randomly will be the representation of the productivity of the applied floor
wax.

PRODUCTION OF PLASTIC WASTE FLOOR WAX

The plastic materials (plastic bottles, plastic bags, straw of soft drinks, plastic cups) will
collect from the surroundings and the kerosene will be bought in the gas station.

Each of the plastic materials (plastic bottles, plastic bags, straw of soft drinks, plastic
cups) will be cleaned, chopped, and mixed it into the boiling kerosene and it will be cooked, at a
low heat and stir it until it becomes sticky, after the product will be formed. The final product
will be tested to the floor and see if it’s in par with the commercial product.

TREATMENTS CHARACTERISTICS

The applied floor wax will be classified by the ratio of plastics materilas in each
treatment.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The main purpose of giving the plastic waste floor wax acceptability measure was to
determine the effectiveness of plastic waste when applied in concrete material. It also aims to
find out the mean difference between the plastic waste and the commercial available floor wax,
the Brand X floor wax.

Treatment 1 is 4 strongly agree, In plastic bags and plastic straw, the researcher observe
that it’s almost the same with the commercial product of floor wax. The polyethylene wax makes
the floor shine just like the commercial product, it’s very fast to spread the wax. In plastic bottles
and plastic cups, they didn’t melt. So the floor didn’t shine.

Treatment 2, No observation, because the materials used in the second treatment is not
good in making a floor wax , when you melt it’s too thick and fast to dry, you can’t spread it
easily.

In conclusions, plastic cup and plastic bottles used in replicates is not good in making a
polyethylene floor wax. Mixture of all the plastic materials is not good for making a floor wax

Treatment 1 and treatment 2 both smells bad because when temperatures are hot enough
plastics begins to melt, bubble and smoke, releasing a sharp, unpleasant odor. While the smell of
burned plastic is often more unpleasant than dangerous, the vapors and soot that come from
burning plastic are harmful.

In conclusions, plastic cup and plastic bottles used in replicates is not good in making a

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

Plastic waste can be recycled and used to lessen the waste in our environment. There are many
wastes to lessen such as waste to maintain cleanliness in our surroundings and also to prevent
harmful effects to human due to pollution. One of the ways to lessen the waste in our
surroundings was to the plastic wraps that we get from our food, the bottled water that we drink,
the plastic cups and straw that we used. Using this kind of scarp can reduce harmful chemical
components found in the commercial floor wax. Plastic was can be easily found around the
schools and trash bins, especially in the side streets.

Plastic bags and plastic straw can be used for making a alternative floor wax

Plastic bottles and plastic cups cannot be used for making a alternative floor wax.

Mixture of all the plastic materials is not good for making a floor wax .

RECOMMENDATION

 Create a more pleasing scent for the floor wax, hence the use of essential oils: the
researchers would terminate the idea of using a sweet scents to used it could possibly
attract insects.
 Test the finished product and find out how long it’s shine would list compared to a
commercial product under the same controlled natural forces.
 Measure the materials properly that you will put.
