MECHANICAL VAPOUR RECOMPRESSION SYSTEM FOR THE EVAPORATION OF

WATER FROM SALT CONTAINING SOLUTION:

Background:
1. To reduce the steam consumption used for the evaporation of water from salt solution by using
Mechanical Vapour Recompression system (MVR).
2. Basic principle of MVR system consists of reusing the steam generated during the evaporation of
salt solution, by compressing it in a mechanical device and reusing the resulting high pressure
steam, having higher saturated temperature as the heating medium for evaporation.

Observations:
1. No utility steam input is required for evaporation, apart from an initial heating at start up.
2. Salt solution circulation in the evaporation system by thermo siphoning effect, hence there is no
requirement for pump during the initial stages of evaporation.

Action taken:
1. For procurement of suitable compressor various vendors were consulted and quotations were
received. Finalisation of competitive vendor was done and the suitable compressor procured.
2. Accessories related with system were installed and the required piping was done as per vendors
requirement. Then the MVR system commissioned.

Plate and frame filter press system for solid liquid separation in ETP
Background:
1. For the separation of solid liquid super decanter was used in the pervious system.
2. For Super decanter 40HP motor was used.

Observations:
1. By replacing the existing super decanter by plate and frame filter press, higher rate of
effective solid-liquid separation can be achieved.
2. By installing plate and frame filter press we can reduce electricity consumption, as plate and
frame filter press requires small capacity motor and pump.

Action taken:
1. For procurement of suitable plate and frame filter press, various vendors were consulted and
quotations were received.
2. Finalisation of competitive vendor was done. Accessories related with system were installed
and the required piping was done as per vendors requirement. Plate and frame filter press
was installed and commissioned.

Payback period:
Annual saving

: 29540 Kwh per annum

Annual saving

: 1 lakhs per annum
