What are the muscles needed for?

All types of movement

To pump blood

To breath

To produce body heat and regulate body temperature

Protect internal organs

Skeletal Muscle

Moves your bones

Voluntary

Over 400 skeletal muscles in your body

Long cells with several nuclei

Stripes called striations in cells

Smooth Muscle

Muscles of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, and other internal

organs

Can remain contracted for long periods of time

Usually one nucleus per cell

Contract slowly and smoothly

Involuntary

No striping

Cardiac Muscle

Muscle of the heart

Involuntary

Works 24/7!

Strongest type of muscle

Only one nucleus per cell

Some striping

Anatomy

How do muscles work?

A skeletal muscle works by contracting (getting shorter)

The muscle can shorten as much as 1/3 its resting length

Each muscle cell is made up of many smaller Myofibrils

The nerve releases a chemical called Neurotransmitters

The neurotransmitters stimulates the entire muscle to contract

Muscle to Tendon to Bone

Opposites Contract

Biceps Contracted = Triceps Relaxed

Biceps Relaxed = Triceps Contracted
