National Mineral Development Corporation Lid. is at Kumaraswamy Iron Ore Deposit, Donimalai, District Bellary in the Stete of Karnataka Kumaraswamy Iron Ore Deposit forms part of the range of fron Ore Deposit in the Bellary ~ Hospet region and lies beween the Latitudes 15°21" N & 15°5'30" N and Longitudes 76°36" E & 76°36'30" E. At the North Western tip of this range is situated Tungabhadra Reservoir, a major lnrgation project serving 1.25 milion acres (approx.) of land, apart from generating power. Donimalat is easily accessible and well connected to Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad by all weather roads. It can also be reached by ral from Tomagallu, which lies on the Hospet-Guntakal ‘board gauge line. A broad gauge line of 23km links Tornagallu with Donimalai. The rail distance to Chennai is 532km. The Project Site can also be reached by road from Chennai, Mumbai & Hyederabad which are about 532km, 720km and 442km away respectively Donimaiai regions enjoy mild summer and winter is also not severe. The maximum temperature in summer rises upto 38°C between May & June whereas minimum temperature in winter drops to 12°C. The area is lashed by heavy rains during monsoon from June to September. The total rainfall everage about 75cm per annum. The humidity is very high during monsoon, ‘The Project area falls in Zone - I of Fig.1 of BIS : 1893 - 1984 for which the basic seismic coefficient, a and seismic zone factor, Fo, may be taken 2s 0.01 and 0.05 respectively as per Table 2 of BIS : 1893 - 1984. ‘The areas under investigation are underlain by Iron Ore ~ more or less reddish ot reddish grey coloured having high specific gravity, hard to very hard, Banded Haematite Jasper is the major source of iron ore deposits. The rock formation of Donimalal consists of Phylites which locally Gesignated as Shales, Banded Haematite Jasper and Banded Haematite Quartzites and basic lgneous rocks known as Green ~ Stone Belt which have been generally metamorphosed to the “Green = Schist facies. This Belt consists of Homblende Schists, Chlorite Schists, Ferrugineous, quartzites, Argilites, Trap Flovis, Quertzites with conglomerates and occasional Limestones. This formation Is also associated with basic rocks — Dolerites and Gabbro (Augite ~ Diorte) in various stages of alteration to Epidiorites(Fermor). The structure of this Belt, which had been started to form a compressed syncline, is regarded asa Folded Synctinorium in which the apparently larger umber of Haemetite — Quartzite bands are present due to repetition of folding, Banded Haematite Jasper and Banded Haematite Quartzites are reddish brown to brownish grey coloured, ‘slightly to moderately hard, fine to medium grained, compact, loose or friable (produced by the cifferent degree of weathering), consists of haematite and quartzite, having sedimentary characteristics i.e, sedimentary textural characteristics and small scale depositional sedimentary features. Rocks are completely granular whether itis Banded Haematite Quartzite or on ~ Banded Haeratite Quartzite / Quartzte, Matrix in the most cases is lacking. Granulation having cataclastic effect 1S a usual feature in the intemal characteristics of the rock types. Therefore, rounded to sub ~ rounded, well sorted and equigranular quartz grains and paucity of ‘cementing / binding materials in the rock types is the only reason for the present behaviour of the rock types. So far as total core recovery ofthe rock types is concerned It is stated that those rocks will be disintegrated more easily because of the granular characteristics, well sorted texture and lack of binding materials, But as a whole rock is behaving as hard rock because of its ‘mineralogical composition and fabric patter, ‘Foundation Consotans, Koata Tob Ne 061087 FSIS 7 eeeeropenrr-r7*70@e@0°77 atonal Mineral Development Corporation Lc. Standard Penetration Tests ‘Standard Penetration Tests were conducted at regular intervals inside all the 45 (fortyfive) nos. exploratory bore holes at reqular intervals as per the provisions laid down in BIS : 2131-1981. The split spoon sampler used for such tests was of standard design and dimensions _ (50 mm ©.D., 35 mm I.D., minimum open length 600 mm) as stipulated in the relevant BIS Code of Practice. The split spoon sampler in all the tests had been adopted to lower end of drill rods taken upto specific depths of tests. The split spoon sampler was advanced by driving with a drop hammer, weighing 63.5 kg, falling freely through a height of 75 cm. ‘record of number of blows required for middle 30 cm penetration of a total penetration of 60 ‘cm at the specific depths of tests in each bore hole was recorded as °N’ values for corresponding test depths in the respective bore holes, ‘The disturbed soil samples, collected from the split spoon sampler after completion of each test, hhad been subsequently used for visual identification and dassification of the subsurface deposits ‘and for preparation of the bore hole logs and also for carrying out some specific laboratory tests. ‘The Ne-values have been presented graphically against depth separately for all the 45 (fortyfive) nos, exploratory bore holes in Dvig.No.¢ through 48 in Volume 17 ofthis report. In sandy/sity layers, the ‘Elastic Modulus’ of in-situ soll, ‘E,', may be estimated from the "Mitchell ‘and Gardner" equation using penetration values as follows : E, = 10 (N+ 15) ks. for sandy sol E, = 6 (N+ 5) ksf. for dayey sand The so called Elastic Modulus of sol, 'E,, may be utilized in computing immediate elastic settlement of foundations resting on granuiar deposits Foundation Consultants, Kotkata Tb No 061087 FEAIS z ‘Navona Mineral Development Corpration Lt yderated ‘Kumarassamny tron Ore Project at Conimalsi in the District of Bellary, Kamatoka B.1.3 Trial Pit Trial Pits, 2 m x 2 m size in plane at the bottom were excavated at 36 (thirtysix) nos. prefixed locations so as to permit easy access for visual examination of walls of the Pits and to facilitate sampling operations upto 3.0 m depth below the presently existing ground level at the respective locations including collection of representative samples. One loading truss was used to provide load reaction and the same was so located that the centre of the beam against which the loading Jack would work was over the centre of the surface to be tested. The proving ring of the Field CBR Test Set-up was connected to the bottom end of the ramp and the piston connector. The piston was then connected using lengths of extension pipes ensuring that the entire assembly was not out of plumb and the loading jack clamped in position. The surcharge annular weight of 5 kg was then kept in position on the surface to be tested so that when the piston was lowered it would pass through the hole in the annufar weight. ‘The penetration piston was then seated with the smallest possible load not exceeding ‘ 0.002 kg / mm? so that full contact is ensured between the piston and the surface to be tested. While seating oad was on the piston, a 6 mm layer of dean sand was spread over the surface to be covered by the surcharge annular weight to help distributing the surcharge load over the surface uniformiy. After applying minimum surcharge weight of 15 kg, the penetration indicating dial was suitably fixed for reading the penetration and the dial set'to zero. Loads were then applied on the penetration piston so that the penetration rate was approximately 1.25 mm per minute. The load readings were then recorded at penetrations of 0.50 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.50 mm, 2.0mm, 2.50 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, 7.50 mm, 10.0 mm and 12.50 mm. This arrangement induced a uni-directional vibratory force at the base of the Oscilstor, Depending upon the orientation of the two counter-rotating shafts, either vertical or horizontal dynamic force (passing through the centre of gravity of the Oscilator) were realised. B.1.7.2.4 Determination of Coefficient of Elastic Uniform Shear of Soil, C, ‘The Coefficient of Elastic Uniform Shear Cc ‘of soil can be determined by the following ‘equation : 2 2. C28 YP HA + I) VA, +1498, T) Where, y= Mm/ Mme fix = Horizontal Resonant Frequency of Block-Soil System mo = AIM o 3.461/ M0 Mm Mass Moment of Inertia of Block, Oscilator, Motor etc, about the horizontal axis passing through the centre of gravity of block and perpendicular to the direction of vibration. Mm@ = Mass Moment of Inertia of the Block, Oscillator, Motor etc, about the horizontal axis passing through centre of contact area of block and soil and perpendicular to. the direction of vibration; and 1 = Moment of Inertia of the foundation contact area about the horizontal axis passing through the centre of gravity of area and perpendicular to the direction of vibrations. As the mode of vibration of this in-situ soil system resembles the first mode (lower natural frequency), negative sign is taken in the above equation. ‘The Coefficient of Elastic Uniform Shear for actual area of the foundation (Cr1) Is given by the following equation : C= Cr Vv A/A, “Feandaton Consultants, Kola Job Wie 51087 PPS @ ~7736@@e@0e@7777- OE Cees ‘atone Hinerai Development Corporation id. Kumarasnamy Iron Ore Project at Donimala! in the DestritofBelary, Kamataka B.1.7.2.5 Relation between C,,,C,, C, and C,, ‘The Coefficent of Eiastic Uniform Compression, C,_, the Coefficient of Elastic Uniform Shear, Ct and the Coefficient of Elastic Nonuniform Compression, Cp and the Coefficient of Elastic 'Nonuniform Shear Cy are related to each other by the relations given below : C= LSto2cr Cy=3.46cr Cy 7 0756, Tt may be noted that the relation between C., Cr, Cb and Cy depends upon elastic properties of the medium, the soll, the size and shape of contact area and flexibility or rigidity of the foundation. The values obtained by using the above relationship may be taken 8 average values. B.1.7.2.6 Determination of Damping Coefficient of Soil Damping is caused by both geometrical dispersion of the wave energy with propagation away from a point source and also by internal hysteretic damping within the soil as it undergoes plastic deformation. The effective damping available in the soil can be determined from the shape of the Frequency Response Curve or the Decay in the Vibration Amplitude of a block subject to vibrations. In case of Forced Vertical Vibration Test, the value of Damping Coefficient, &, of soll is given by the following equator B= CG GIR hy) = S12 Sy 4, = Two frequencies at which the amplitude Is equal to x,,/2 of Xm = Maximum Amplitude corresponding to fnz Jn2 = Frequency at which Amplitude is maximum (Resonant Frequency).
