BACK

Equivalent fractions
What is an equivalent (equal) fraction?
is the same as : 2/4
6/12
Why?

3/6

4/8

5/10

2/4 is of 4/4
3/6 is of 6/6
4/8 is of 8/8
5/10 is of 10/10
6/12 is of 12/12
BACK

Reducing Fractions
1 numerator Part of the fraction above the line.
2 denominator part of the fraction below the line.
To reduce a fraction to lowest term, you can :
Divide the numerator and denominator by their GCD.
GDC? Greatest Common Divisor.
The greatest common divisor is the largest natural
number
That the numerator or the denominator can be divided by
with no remainders.
BACK

Reducing Fractions (cont..)

To find the GCD of a set of numbers, find the prime
factorization of each number, select each prime that
appears in all factorization, and use it the smallest
number
of times it appears in any of them.
Example
10 = 2 . 5 and 14 = 2 . 7

2 appears in both so GCD of

(10,14) is 2
12 = 3 . 4 and 15 = 3 . 5
3 appears in both so GCD of
(12,15) is 3 (in this set)
BACK

Improper & mixed fraction

An improper fraction is one in which the numerator is larger
than the denominator.

A mixed number is the combination of a whole number and

a fraction

BACK

Multiplying & dividing fractions

To multiply two fraction together, you can multiply the
numerators and the denominators separately, and then
reduce the result to lowest term.

BACK

Adding & subtracting fractions

When adding or subtracting fraction with the same
denominator, add or subtract the numerator only and keep
the same denominator then reduce to the lowest term.
